Boerum Hill Brooklyn has a great vibe, a combination of small neighborhood with NYC cosmopolitan scene. Over ther past few years, the restaurant scene on Smith has exploded. Some are better than others, but all deserve a look. The shopping on Smith is nice too, great boutiques, local designers, and Atlantic Ave. boutiques are not far. My favorite French place is Bar Tabac on Dean, but don't neglect Robin du Bois that has a real party fun atmosphere and amazing back yard. New cuban place is tasty, we love Banania for brunch. Decent thai food at Tuk Tuk. And there's way too many to write up in just one review. You should definitely make it a stop on your next visit to NYC. Very much like Avenue A about 15 years ago.

We had a copy of a literary review from one of the New York magazines (thanks to my cousin for that!) which detailed a walking tour around Brooklyn Heights, Cobble |Hill and on to Boerum Hill. So we set off and did most of it. Lovely area, beautiful houses. We finished up in Bar Tabac on the corner of Smith Street and Dean Street. It was a great find. Lovely beers to try and we had a smashing lunch too. Smith street area was busy and vibrant with lots of independent stores. A great part of Brooklyn and worth a visit when on holiday.

Smith Street, from 1st Place all the way to Atlantic Avenue, is a great place to visit and to eat. There are brand new restaurants opening every few months BUT the real, well established places are still here, too. Long before all the Yippsters, Hipters, Yuppies and Artsey Fartsy groups came along, Smith Street was a Blue Collar, Working Class neighborhood.
There are some very good newer places and some fantastic Old World places. Do your research - - - Old or New: if the restaurant is owned by anyone who had a show on The Food Network, don't go. You're paying for thier name NOT good food.
If the owner of the Restaurant or Bar has a 2nd, 3rd or 4th business in the area - DON'T Go. You have just found a place interested in your money for a 1 shot deal, NOT your continued business. (In other words, poor food and Over Priced drinks - - - YES, a tourist trap)
But if you find a place that has been there, under the same ownership, for 20+ years, then you've found a gem.
Red Rose was the 1st real restaurant to open on Smith Street over 25 years ago. Casa Rosa & Sam's have both been open for 25 to 30 years, but you'll find those places on Court Street NOT Smith Street.
As far as the NON- eating/drinking things to do, Smith Street is a great place for little boutiques featuring clothing & jewlery.
Summary - to shop, go to the new artsey places. To Eat - stick to the old established places.

If you're in the neighborhood, it's always fun to walk the mile or so of Smith Street from Atlantic Avenue to the end. There are lots of interesting stores, restaurants, and bars. The closer you get to Atlantic, the fancier the establishments become. but it's still all human scale and pretty laid back. Nearby is Court Street, which runs parallel to Smith. If you like to walk, go up one and down the other. Between the two, I think Court is even more interesting, but both are good. You will probably get hungry if you go the distance, which will be good news, because lots of good eating places are strong suits on both streets.

If you really want to understand how Brooklyn works, you will have to walk the streets. Just wander up Smith Street. U will be abe to see the change with your own eyes. You start your walk in Red Hook where Smith Street undergoes a rebirth from an industrial center to the newest residential frontier. On the northern end, it will pass right through the historical center of Brooklyn, it passes the beautifull Borough Hall and ist neigbouring courthouses. And in between, Smith Street boasts an eclectic mix of hip bars, restaurants and boutiques, along with remnants of the pre-gentrification, working class neighborhoods that would become what Carroll Gardens and Boerum Hill are today.

Lots of cafes and restaurants, independent boutiques and some bigger name stores like Free People but in small nicely designed shops. Friendly local neighbourhood feel. Smith Street bagel and Paisano’s Butcher Shop. Also close to Court St which is worth a wander when in the area. Modern gentrified Brooklyn but in an original neighbourhood setting. It’s a fun area. Some places can be very expensive and overpriced but that’s common to many places in Brooklyn now. Head to BedStuy for a more ‘real’ Brooklyn experience and Bedford Avenue.

Smith St. is the main artery of Carroll Gardens and is home to many restaurants, bars and a variety of stores. While this street was once rather decrepit it has been transformed to a major shopping and dining destination. As a local I'm not thrilled that some corporate chains have laid claim to some of the spaces but there is still plenty of authenticity to go around. I recommend taking the F train to the Carroll St. station and walking (roughly) North on Smith as this will allow you to see most of what the street has to offer. Also, there is plenty to see and eat so don't limit yourself to Smith alone, walk a block (roughly) West to Court Street to find even more interesting places to visit.
