Located up a long bumpy road. A short walk to the falls. Somewhat dangerous for very young children. You have to cross some water to see the waterfall, which is back in the cave. There isn't a bridge. It was worth it though.

There is a good national forest campsite here, as well as the relatively short hike to the falls. The road up to the trail head and campground is really bumpy - lots of rocks.

As we drove by, we decided to see the falls on a whim. No research. Yes, the road is VERY rocky. I wouldn't describe it as a gravel road. We needed to weave from side to side to try avoiding the big rocks and rough...More

Lovely hike. Once we reached the stream, we realized that in order to view the Falls we had to walk upstream. There was no trail or placard explaining that walking a 100ft in icy rushing water was necessary to enter the cave/opening to view the...More

The 3-4 mile road was extremely rocky...almost need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Then once finally get to the top, there's a 1/4 mile hike up 400 ft in elevation across an even more rocky and treacherous trail. You finally get to the creek, and...More

First ... the drive to the falls is on a poorly maintained gravel road that is VERY bumpy. I found it fun, my wife not so much. ;-) There is a short, up hill hike (15-20 minutes) to the river. Once there you have to...More

We turned off on the road to Zapata Falls on a whim, not knowing what to expect, and were very pleasantly surprised. While the rocky dirt road up to the falls is not designed for small two-wheel drive vehicles (although there were plenty of rental...More

The 3 mile drive up the rocky road will make you question your commitment; the ride down will make you happy that you did it. The falls is in a canyon that requires that you wade through a stream. Yes your feet get wet, and...More

This waterfall is a must see if you are near the Great Sand Dunes and you can borrow a friends car because the 3 mile road up to the falls is terribly rocky. And yes, once you've survived to trail up to the falls parking...More

I went in March and the waterfall inside was nearly all frozen. Once inside the cave, the ice is very slippery. I'm assuming as summer progresses, the ice thins out.
