We stopped at the salt fields on a tour around Kampot and I found it really interesting to see all that goes into producing the salt that we take so easily for granted. Teams of people were draining sections ready to be filled with salt water tomorrow, whilst in other sections, workers were carefully raking the salt that had solidified on the surface into piles. Painstaking work in such hot weather.

We took a tuktuk tour for 30usd for a whole day. we started in Kep and first stop was salt fields then cave then pepper farm then back to hotel.
salt fields you can see on the way to Cambodia crossing border so you can skip it in case you will take tuk tuk through the beach road later to go to Cambodia.
They bring salty water from sea and wait for couple of days to dry and then collect it. Nice to see the process once in a lifetime.

It would be easy to say 'so wha?t' but the salt fields are a vital local industry providing much neeedt, albeit, casual empoyment when the fields are drying out. A simple Visitor's Centre could benefit from more investment but even to learn about the varieties of salt was interesting.
As always I wonder who paid for the large offices of local federation!

Don't even bother coming here during wet season. There is no activity whatsoever except for the "exhibition" which rips you off by asking you for money to watch a 6 minute video about salt and its production...

We relied on our tuk-tuk driver who provided much of the information when we got to the salt fields, it was interesting watching the women harvest the salt - and we saw a storage place - we didn't go to the information centre

We stopped by the Salt Fields on our way to the caves with or tuk-tuk driver. We thought this might be an interesting place to see some nature in action. We stopped by, took some pics and then walked in. We thought there was going to be a tour. A lady showed us 3 bags of salt and told us to buy a bag for $2. We said we’ll think about it. She then told us to watch a movie, and mind you she said it with a voice that totally sounded like a bad infomercial. She told us if we paid $2 dollars each she would give us the bag of salt. At that point, we had enough of and just left. Save your time and energy and simply avoid this tourist trap joke.

I stopped here yesterday and enjoyed taking some photos and watching the ladies hard at work sweeping the salt. Worth a look if in Kep or Kampot!

Our resort host gave us this tour for free. He took around Fish Island & talked us through all the salt production bits & pieces. But as mentioned in other posts out of season there really isn’t much to see. We found it an interesting tour of the entire island & well worth the complimentary cost.

Our tour visited these fields to learn about the natural harvesting of salt which occurs with the evaporation of water. Different stages of production result in different grades of salt.
