This was originally built by Pandya kings as mud fort. Later was reconstructed as granite fort by De Lennoy, commander of Travancore Army. Great fort with separate slope for taking artillery and lots of defensive positions in the ramparts. Great fort to visit with excellent view of the nearby beach.

It is one of the heritage site with breathtaking view of ocean, mountains and windmills along the coast, 9 kms from kanyakumari but maintenance needs urgent attention. Opens up at 9am so u can come down after taking a holy trip to Sushendrum temple on the opposite direction and relax here. No entry ticket. Good place for picnic with kids on the untouched, uncrowded beach. Carry your food n drinking water as nothing is available there. Somebody leaving Kanyakumari in a hurry can also visit as it takes just 15 mins to finish the spot. Visit if you have time to spare as it is worth a visit.

A Fort that stands protecting the sea. view from that fort is very beautiful. Shallow sea provides beautiful color tuning to the view with green, blue and its combinations..
No fees to enter the fort.
It was built as a common brick fort, later it was reinforced with huge granite blocks by the french. The place has such a price in those days. The place where the fort stands was a huge pearl hub. you can still see some locals looking for something in the sea shores.
There is a beautiful garden at the center of the fort.

This is a very silent destination, on the way to Kanyakumari. To reach the fort you got to ask a couple of people, as there are no signboards or directions from the main road. But once on the road to the fort, you can see the fort and follow the direction.
The fort is built using granite blocks and looks as if it has come up from the sea. The old fort is well maintained by ASI and is kept neat and clean. They have taken special care to keep the surroundings green, may it be trees or the well trimmed ground grass.
We reached there at mid afternoon, was very hot, but inside the fort campus there is a Neem Tree under which we had a great nap. Wonderful place, cool breeze and nice ambiance altogether. There is a pond in the middle, that too well maintained. There WAS a tunnel from the fort to Padmanabhapuram Palace which is 25 km far, but presently is caved in and cannot be seen.
From one side you can see endless fields of Windmills. To the opposite, you can see the tall statue of Shri Tiruvalluar beyond long black sand beaches. There is a provision to take open bath in sea, with no enclosures, so not so lady friendly.
History is slightly obscured, but few facts are available. The fort was built by a Dutch captain for protection of Travancore from sea attacks, that time this area being under Travancore kingdom of kerala. This fort presently belongs to Tamil Nadu. There is a Guide there who can be hired at a nominal rate. He'll take you around the fort, but with very little English knowledge.
There is NO FOOD AVAILABLE for purchase here. A small time vendor with an inventory of some local drinks and Mineral Water is the only respite.

On the way from Nagercoil to Kanyakumari we stopped at Vattakotai fort. It provides a good view of the ocean. Besides that there is nothing else.

Love this place. The view was great. It is open until 5pm so you can't watch the sunset from here. Free entry too!

Do not expect too much from the fort. It is located in kind of a remote area. Once u reach get to the top of the fort using the stairs, you can see the sea on the left. The view is good but its worth only half an hour of your time.

This fort is approximately 8 Kms from Kanyakumari town by road travel. The Vattakotai Fort also known as the "Circular Fort" was built in the 18th century and is rectangular in shape enclosed with granite walls approximately 25 feet in height .It occupies a area of three and a half acres facing the sea. This place was famous for its "Pearl trade " and hence the fort built by Raja Marthanda.Verma to fortify the Najil Nadu region.Entry into the fort is through a gate on the main entrance which has the coat of arms embossed on the granite wall of the entrance. Inside the fort is a large water tank in its centre with well maintained meadows on either sides. It resembles a open ground or park enclosed by huge granite walls. There was also a underground tunnel four feet in width that is now sealed and once connected Vattakotai Fort with Padmanabhapuram Palace..Walked up to the parapet of the fort walls and got a excellent view of the windy rough seas and the coastline which included a cluster of windmills situated on Cheetikullam beach towards the northern coast about 12 kms from Kanyakumari..

Hello! My mother and I are planning a visit in January 2019... She is 83 years old and has difficulty walking. Is there any type of way she can tour the property all the way to the rectangular beach-front fort area? Is there any type of motorized cart or any mobile assistance available please? Thank you in advance.
