President Harry S Truman took America from its traditional isolationism into the age of international involvement. Despite his power, he never forgot where he came from. Today, visitors can experience the surroundings Truman knew as a young man of modest ambition through his political career and final years as a former president.

We (myself, wife, son, dau-in-law and two grandchildren--ages 1 and 8) visited Harry Truman's home in Independence as prelude to visiting his presidential library later that same day. Was a wonderful idea, as we saw from the humble and unpretentious accommodations what the Trumans were...More

When we first were planning our trip to KC we weren't planning on a visit here or really Independence for that matter but I'm so glad we did. Seeing the Truman House, hearing the stories and learning about Harry S., Bess and their family was...More

An interesting look at how the Trumans lived after leaving the White House, and moving back to Independence MO. The house is like walking into a time capsule. The tour is short but very interesting.

I lived next door to this house for 14 years and finally made the visit a few years after I moved away. My wife had lived in the house next door since 1986 when her parents bought the house to renovate. We bought the house...More

We really enjoyed our visit. We got our tickets for the tour of the house just in time. Tours are small so you may have to get tickets early in the day to get in. They take you through the house, but allow no photos...More

Stopped here in route from east to west. A quick stop in a long road trip. This site is nice, but the tickets to the Ranger led tours are given out for the same day on a first come, first serve basis. This makes it...More

Was impressed by how humble a former president could be. Loved the tour. Get to visitor center early to get tickets.

Get your tickets at the visitor's center near the main town square. The National Park Ranger who did our tour of this amazing historical home was outstanding. The house is just as Bess left it when she died. A step back in history with some...More

We enjoyed our 30 minute tour and learned plenty of new stuff. You can't go upstairs which is a bit of a bummer but the downstairs has interesting decor, tour guide was very knowledgeable.

Excellent tour of Harry And Bess Truman's home in INdependence, MO. The home is maintained to look just as it did when they lived in it up to Harry Truman's death in the early 1970's. The tour guide gave very interesting details about the home...More

There is a metal fence surrounding the house but it does not obscure the view

We stayed at an RV park. A person could google for that information.
