We love to come to this museum and enjoy the art. The artwork is world class and the museum is free. We chose this week to come because it was Spring Break for UWM and we knew it would be easier to find parking on the compass. The main building is under renovation but there was still plenty to see in the other building. The renovation should be done by the end of this year so we look forward to their reopening.

First of all, the original part of the museum (designed by Harry Weese, I was told by the museum staff...) was being renovated...and presumably half of their collection was in storage. The new wing (designed by Machado Silvetti Associates) is elegant in its simplicity...but could not compensate for the (I presume...) very abbreviated collection on display.

I look forward to return visit when they're done!

Enjoy!

I was thrilled to see the museum was open on a Monday and also until 7. We arrived at 6, so we were unable to see the entire museum, but really enjoyed what we saw. The perk was we didn’t have to share the galleries with many people. I’d love to return when I have more time.

We spent a great Sunday afternoon exploring the Museum. The art was diverse and thought provoking. We enjoyed walking around on a rainy day.

I'm sure it's perfectly fine as an art museum (considering it's free); however, we felt unwelcome there.

In a university town that is noted for its art and military and geology and history museums, the Chazen Museum of Art is most popular of all, attracting nearly one million visitors annually. Located at 750 University Avenue, it was established in 1969 and named for Conrad Elvehjem, the 13th president of the university and an internationally known biochemist in nutrition, until 2005, it was renamed the Chazen Museum of Art after a $20 million building/expansion donation from alumni Simona and Jerome A. Chazen, the latter being a founder of Liz Claiborne Inc., now Kate Spade & Company. The original museum building, which opened in 1970, retains the Elvehjem name. In 2015, the Chazens again made a substantial donation to the museum that included 30 works of art valued at $20 million. European artists whose works are represented in the museum include Joan Miro, Auguste Rodin, Salvador Dali, Thomas Gainsborough, Henry Moore, Rene Magritte, Maurice Utrillo, Barnaba da Modena, Andrea Vanni, Giorgio Vasari, Hubert Robert, Eugene Boudin and Maximilien Luce. The collection of artwork from American artists features works by Andy Warhol, Grandma Moses, Alexander Calder and Mark Rothko. Also a collection of regionalist paintings by John Steuart Curry, Russian Social Realist paintings by Georgy Ionin and Klavdy Vasiliyevich Lebedev, glass art by Rene Lalique and the Van Vleck collection of Japanese woodblock prints that remain a large portion of the museum's collection of works on paper.

This was a really great museum. It helps that some of our favorite artists from around the globe were represented here, of course, but it’s still a really great museum. And it’s free so you might as well visit. You can do a flyby if you’re pressed for time, but there’s enough here to spend a couple of hours if you so desire.

This museum was fine. It's about the right size - you can take it all in a single visit. It's also free, which is great. There is a scavenger hunt for kids, and although it's not great, it did keep my 10 year old from complete boredom. The collection has a wide range of materials, although it's a lot of modern art, which isn't out favorite, so it didn't appeal to us as much as it might to someone who loves modern art.

First, unless this is an adults trip, know that a bunch of the more modern “art” is not family friendly. It’s not particularly adult friendly—-unfortunately I cannot “unsee” this stuff. No, it doesn’t challenge me or make me reflect on anything. It’s just garbage created by seriously demented people who contribute nothing to societal advancement.

On the bright side. The collection of 15th- 19th century realism is quite good.

Summary: skip this “art museum “…the actual art is scarce.
