Lake Mendota is the larger of the two lakes that flank the Madison, WI isthmus. I've virtually visited every area around this lake (minus private property I was not invited onto). As a photographer, I have found several spots for sunsets, sunrises, blue hours (reflections...More

Seeing the University of Wisconsin Campus and the State Capitol dome from a cruise on Lake Mendota is interesting. It is a good lake for sailing. However, the algae that develops from mid June through August is terrible; discourages getting into the water.

If you can stay at the Edgewater Hotel and get a room with a view I highly recommend it. The lake is stunning and the view very beautiful.

We spent a morning at James Madison Park which is right on the lake. There were picnic tables and benches. There was not much shade but it was still cool out. Located close to downtown.

Grab a beer and sit by the lake on a summers day. Lots of water activities on the Lake as well. Highly recommend.

We have boated on this lake dozens of times and we hear it's great fishing as well. We please boat with family and friends and it's an incredible way to spend a summer day.

Went kayaking on the lake with my girlfriend starting at Brittingham. It's a great lake, small waves, good view, very large. It's a good way to find quiet right next to the city. Very nice for kayaking.

Wow. Any time of year, Lake Mendota takes my breath away. On sunny days, during sunsets, when it's frozen and people are skating, when youth camps parade sailboats along the shoreline: Lake Mendota ceases to amaze me. It's not huge like the Great Lakes but...More

Lake Mendota is a fair size lake, but not so large that one can not see the entire shoreline. One can walk from Lake Mendota to Lake Monona in less than 1/2 hr.

The best place to be dropped off would be the Memorial Union on the UW campus which is under major renovation but I believe they still rent boats and paddle boards there but you may have to be a student or faculty member. A... More
