We walked around and were impressed by the lovely landscaping and openness of the area. There were lots of people, but unlike many state capitals, the vibe was calm and not anxious. We even ran into Miss America!

Capitol Square in Madison, Wisconsin, is the best destination for shopping, dining and entertainment for locals and tourists. Located at 2 East Main Street, where State Street meets Capitol Square, on the isthmus between two scenic lakes and centered around the Wisconsin State Capitol, it is bordered by North Pinckney, West Mifflin, South Carroll and East Main. It isn't just the seat of state government, it's like playing on the state's front lawn. The area is always abuzz with free family events, music festivals, concerts, races, dances and jazz fests that are always evolving, never boring. You might just settle for having lunch on the benches and engage in the art of people-watching. Perhaps the most useful feature of all is the Dane County Capitol Square South Ramp, a mammoth parking facility that is located on the outer ring of Capitol Square on South Fairchild Street. The first five stories were built in 1957 with 700 parking spaces. In 1963, two more stories were added, allowing the facility to accommodate 1,000 vehicles. The parking garage provides easy access to the downtown farmers' market, summertime concerts in the Capitol Square, the Wisconsin State Capitol building, Art Fair on the Square, Taste of Madison and 80 area restaurants.

Lots of homeless people sleeping on benches and panhandling, kind of frightening. I thought one guy was actually going to hurt me if I didn't give him some money. Also, the college kids are just as bad as the homeless people. Some guys ended up following me and my friend down the street saying something like "double bubble" and I'm sure we were both very afraid.

Take the capitol tour in the building and learn and see all important places in the capitol which you can not visit on your visit in the capitol alone.

I worked in the old Greyhound Bus Station and used to pick up the mail at the Federal Building. I have also taken official tours of the Capitol. Businesses come and go. If you can, visit when the food carts are out or summer when the farmers' market is operating. Great people watching and grazing!

Whoever designed this area sure was thinking ahead. A gorgeous, tree-lined walkway surrounds the capital and on Saturdays (spring to fall) the Farmer's Market is not to be missed!

We came on a Saturday during the Farmers' Market. The area was bustling with activities. We visited the Veteran Museum and the Historical Museum. We enjoyed the Farmers' Market and there are plenty of retail stores and restaurants around the square.

Captivating views of the building from many side streets. Lively farmers market on Saturdays around the square. Numerous restaurants, coffee shops, convenience stores, hotels, and more within 1/4 m from capitol.
