About
Built in 1861, by local architect James Gallier, Jr. as his private family residence, this Victorian French Quarter townhouse exemplifies architectural features that are not only unique to New Orleans, but also innovative and advanced for the period. Marked by an iconic Paris Green gate, the Royal street home includes an ornate interior décor, running hot and cold water, experimental skylight, intact attached slave quarters, and classic courtyard.

Neighbourhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

The Gallier House was built in 1859 for architect James Gallier Jr. and his family. The beautiful front and rear parlor are styled in Victorian era décor. Elaborate crown molding, original gasaliers and a kitchen with a gas range &copper broiler to heat water for the bathtub upstairs are some of the unique features of this wonderful home. Thank you Jacob Williams for an exceptional tour

Aside from the fact that public parking in French Quarter is highway robbery unless you have an hour to look for a public space and carefully read restrictions, this is a very good tour. Guide had buckets of knowledge, fielded questions with relish, and really took the whole tour to another level. The house itself reads more upper middle class than wealthiest of the wealthy for the time period, but it is furnished nicely in period, and certainly those with money lived rather well indeed. Complete tour inside - very much appreciated. Well worth seeing.

What an amazing place! It's so well set up that you feel your stepped into a time machine. Such beautiful furniture and accessories. I was doubly fascinated by the indoor plumbing set up as not a lot of homes, even the most elegant, rarely had tubs much less a flush toilet.
We're definitely going to plan a return trip to the "Big Easy" soon!
Thank you

This was the home of a wealthy antebellum businessman and thus offers a glimpse into the creole life. It is very well maintained full of antiques. Look for the bathroom which had one of the first flush toilets in Louisiana. (They would not allow the slaves to use it.) The guide was excellent.

Excellent tour. We happened to come during a slow time and as a result had our own private tour. We were shown through nearly the entire townhouse and yard filled with period accurate furniture. We learned of the family who lived in the home in the mid 1800’s and of the house itself. How it was built what was unique about it and how the family lived during this era. We love looking at old homes and learning about the history so this was a dream tour for us. Our tour guide was excellent and passionate about history. Highly recommend it.

Warren is such a knowledgeable, professional, and enthusiastic guide, and he made the whole presentation so informative and interesting. Really enjoyed the Hermann Grima and Gallier house tours. A must-see in french quarter. The two houses are pretty close and 1.5 hours would be enough to visit both houses.

If you are interested in the way of life during the mid to late 1800 you can’t miss this. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and the house is beautifully preserved. You will get a complete picture how this family lived and what it was like in New Orleans during that time. One of the best tours I have ever been on.

Well cared for and historically accurate curated home in the heart of the French Quarter. I stumbled across this gem on a solo day trip (I live in New Orleans). It was Monday and the museums were closed so I thought “what the heck?” I’m kicking myself for not visiting sooner!!! I was lucky enough to to get a private tour (middle of the afternoon, not busy) and my guide was wonderful! The house is beautiful and the history lesson was amazing. My guide answered all my questions with such thought and care. I could have stayed there all day! It’s experiences such as this that make me proud to live in New Orleans. Can’t wait to take my family back when they visit.

Beautiful and well outfitted home museum. Very informative guide (her name escapes me but she was young). Interesting to see for sure. They don't really get into the full story as much as I would like (focus is heavily on the 3 or 4 year period when enslaved people were in the house) but there is a lot of good information and all the questions I asked were very well answered for sure.

This is one of a must-do tours while visiting New Orleans for the first time. The city is rich in culture and preserved architecture that have lasted for centuries until present days. We came on a Tuesday afternoon for 11 am tour. The price is $15/person but it is so worth it. Our docent was extremely knowledgeable and easy to understand. She gave vast amounts of information and delivered it without overwhelming the receivers. The tour covers the history of the Mr. Gallier and his family, the ideas behind the architecture found throughout the house, different techniques done to produce the specific styles, design, or patterns of furniture, embellishments, and art found throughout the house, some history about the slave quarters within the house, and more. This tour gives a different perspective to the French quarter houses which may appear small on the outside. The tour lasted for about 45 minutes to 1 hour and it went by fast. The house is located right next to Madame LaLaurie's haunted house. The check in area for the tour is located inside the building to the right of the house.

Is there a charge to tour the house?

Yes, a nominal one. I think you can look that up on their website.
