The area
Address
Neighbourhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

The riverfront park was a great place to stretch our legs, especially after beignets and coffee and the adjacent Cafe Du'Monde. The views of downtown New Orleans, being alongside the Mississippi River, the views across the river, and further down the river, all made for an enjoyable walk. This popular stretch is a great place to break away from the bustle of New Orleans.

Just South of the busy French Quarter is this peaceful small strip of grass near the river bank. The steamships Natchez and the City of New Orleans are moored there. Those are artifacts of past glories. There is also a monument dedicated to the numerous immigrants that came into the city. You can also get a good view of the Crescent City Connection in the background.

Start your walk at the French Market and go all the way down to Canal Street and Riverfront mall. You will pass into Crescent Park on the way. Nice breeze coming off the water and the boats go by.

There's nothing quite like sitting along the walkway, people watching, watching the water, steamboats, and barges creep by. So soothing and relaxing. I am usually on the end near the wharf area and Dumaine.

The river is a must see for me. Once I am off the plane, my first stop is to the river before anything else is attended to. During my stay, it is a must that I visit the river daily. I prefer early mornings around sunrise.

Named after philanthropist and park investor Malcolm Woldenberg (1896-1982), the park is a sliver of green space that stretches about four city blocks along the Mississippi River in the French Quarter.

EXPERIENCE:
We ended up here by chance as we wandered the city with daiquiris-in-hand. From the street, we couldn’t see what was beyond this oddly tall staircase which seemed to lead to nowhere, but turns out it’s part of the area’s strong levees.

There was lots of space to spread out and enjoy the views of the muddy river and iconic riverboats going by. A handful of benches are peppered throughout, with gardens, grassy areas, jogging paths, and a small holocaust memorial.

There’s a good-sized aquarium and IMAX theater at the west end but we didn’t go in. If you’re wanting to jump on one of the riverboats, you’d access the piers from the west side of the park as well. Opposite on the east end is a gazebo that looks like it doubles as a stage for special events.

OVERALL:
A quaint little park perched on a levee. How often do you get to experience that?

Lovely setting right on the Mississippi in the heart of New Orleans. Definitely worth a quick walk along the river, but BEWARE of the vagrants, drunks and scammers working the park. There's a ton of shady characters who honestly made the area feel unsafe. I would definitely avoid at night.

I could sit here and watch the barges go up the river for hours. If your lucky enough you can see a cruise ship pass by. Grab some beignets and coffee and head to the river.

It was a pretty good walk from our hotel on Bourbon Street but there were so many sights on the walk. We enjoyed watching and listening to the old steam engine riverboats.

We walked along the Mississippi and towards the market place.

This is a nice area with plenty of food and shopping.

It was a plus that they had clean public restrooms.

My husband and I chose to view the river by walking along the walkway of this Riverfront park. It was a lovely morning with the sun shining...perfect weather for a stroll. We were pleasantly surprised to come upon a Holocaust Memorial. We also got to see the new steam boat The New Orleans which has not yet been put in to service for the public. The stroll was limited by being cut off at both ends so really not a destination walk to anywhere else.
