A beautiful old church in the Garden District. The church was locked when we arrived, but there is a staffed visitor center. We rang the bell and even though it was 15 minutes until closing time (3:00), they took us and a family into the building and on a tour, Our guide did not rush us and let us hang... More

Amazing and beautiful Church. The Church was closed and I rang the door bell for the office and a sweet lady answered and I mentioned to her I was visiting from CA and I'm a Sir Knight. She introduced me to the gentleman that volunteer in the church and opened the Church. His lovely wife was there and she took... More

My husband and I attended mass here and it was just beautiful. The church community was welcoming and the history interesting. I visited the shrine to Father Seelos as well and found his history worth reading more about.

I had a destination wedding in NOLA and choose to get married in St.Mary's Assumption church of St.Alphonsus Parish. Father Richard Thibodea said our mass and it was spectacular. He has a very genuine personality with a lot of flair! Everyone at the church was very welcoming and organized especially since I was not a member of the church. The... More

This is a cathedral you should not miss if you are in town!! Gorgeous beyond words!! The artistry, vision and old world craftsmanship of those who built this church makes this one of the greatest churches in New Orleans. Take the tour on Saturdays and visit their shrine.

A lovely old church. It is co-located with the Old Ursaline Convent. The tour was to be self-guided, but there was a lady there, perhaps a volunteer and she pointed out many things we would not have known..such as the beautiful ceiling was discovered when a deteriorating ceiling was removed and underneath was the lovely ceiling you see today. Also... More

The church itself is beautiful inside. Decorated in classic Roman Catholic style, very relaxing and peaceful. Attached to church, is the actual shrine of Fr. Francis Xavier Seelos. There you can see his coffin and a nice statue seated on a bench, begging for an Instagram selfie ;) Across the courtyard from the church is a visitors, information, exhibit area... More

The beauty of St. Alphonsus will leave you speechless! Rather unassuming outside, once you enter those doors it a an entirely different world. The area can be a bit sketchy so be aware but don't let it stop you from seeing this magnificent edifice.

Yes, you have most likely seen the inside of St Louis Cathedral but you should REALLY take some time to see St. Mary's Assumption Church. (look it up on google, I can not do it justice) It is a beautiful active Cathoilic Church that has been restored to its past beauty!!!! The photos you see only do the church a... More

Staying in Garden District

Neighbourhood Profile
Garden District
Head to the Garden District for the full-on New Orleans experience replete with quaintly clanking streetcars, proudly grandiose antebellum mansions, picture perfect avenues lined with live oaks loaded down with Spanish moss, and a wealth of beautiful churches and many more architectural marvels. Even a brief excursion here makes plain why it’s called the Garden District. So, when you visit be sure to give yourself ample time for admiration at a languidly slow pace befitting such gentile strand of riverside living and to allow you to maximize each opportunity to stop and smell the roses – and whichever other blooms you might come across. While taking it all in, you’d do well to dine at one of the city’s most beloved destinations for regional cuisine. Gourmands from far and wide (and right round the corner) swear the age-old Commander’s Palace is the best restaurant in town – and have been doing so since it opened back in 1880.
