The area
Neighbourhood: Lakeview
Lakeview extends inland from the shores of Lake Pontchartrain with much of the area reserved for family-friendly City Park. Home to the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, Carousel Gardens Amusement Park, and the city’s own lush Botanical Gardens, City Park is a New Orleans gem and the perfect spot for outdoor fun with as much of a mix of culture and/or amusement as you would like. Beyond City Park more great excuses to stay outside beckon, whether on land or by boat. Developed a good deal later than most other New Orleans neighborhoods, Lakeview has a distinctively different look and feel compared to other parts of the city. Fans of mid century modern design and contemporary architecture particularly enjoy leisurely drives around the residential streets of Lake Vista, Park Island and along Lakeshore Drive.

Came across this statue by chance when going to breakfast in the French Market area of New Orleans. It is a golden bronze statue that is a replica of the 19th Century sculpture (in Paris) by French sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet. It is worth stopping to take a look at and you can't miss it if in the French Market area.

The statue of Joan of Arc did not appear on public display in New Orleans until 1972, 14 years after it first arrived in the city on consignment. One of 10 copies made from the original plaster mold by Frenchman Emmanuel Fremiet, the statue's $35,000 price tag proved too much.

In 1964, French President Charles de Gaulle gifted the statue to the city. He wanted to recognize the city's close ties to France. De Gaulle and the French cities of Orleans, Paris, Rouen and Rheims paid for the cost of the statue.

The statue was erected at the Plaza de France and remained there for two decades until Harrah's built a casino there. The statue was moved to a pocket park in the French Quarter in 1999.

The statue is identical to one that has graced Coe Circle in Portland, Oregon, since 1924. The original was erected in Paris in 1874, near where Joan was injured during her failed attempt to capture Paris. They are all spectacular.

This was a pretty statue. We actually viewed it from our carriage on a mile-drawn carriage ride. Nice little site to see.

My adult daughter and I were walking down Decatur, past Cafe Du Monde and Central Grocery Deli, when she exclaimed, "I saw that when I was a kid with you, dad!" This Golden statue of Joan of Arc is VERY visible and worth a quick stop----especially since it is FREE!

In a city as loud and crazy as New Orleans, it is wonderful to see that it is "guarded" by its patron saint, Joan of Arc. This statue is located down by the French Market at Decatur and Philip Streets. It is made of golden bronze but in the light of day it looks as though it is made of gold. It is quite an impressive landmark. It is a copy of a statue that is in France.

Near the French Market in the French Quarter, we came upon this golden statue of Joan of Arc. Quick photo opportunity and learn about the history. Nice short stop.

This statue is right downtown, across from the French Market, and it easy to view if strolling by on the surrounding streets. It is worth a venture to view and photograph if in the area...a very pretty statue involving local culture.

This was a great place to take a pic with your family.
Easy to find and in the heart of New Orleans.
It was an unexpected find for us.

The statue is located a few blocks down the waterfront from Jackson Square. If the weather is nice, it is well worth walking down (and also seeing the New Orleans Market while you are down there). Very pretty statue with interesting history.

We sat here to eat our muffulettas on a beautiful day. The sun was glimmering off of Joan, we got a little shade, and there was jazz music playing soothingly in a restaurant right across from us. It was a beautiful moment. Hope you have one, too!
