We went right around the Fourth of July 2017. This is just a gorgeous drive- take advantage of the stops & take pictures. It was VERY crowded over the holiday weekend and you will find parking tight around the lake. Take your suit and a...More

We hiked around the lake, didn't venture off, as it started thundering. Earlier child & husband took a dip. It was c-o-l-d :) We were there in September. The drive up is lovely too.

Pure magic. I went there just after sunrise on a cool day where there was still mist over the ripple free lake surface. I was speechless and amazed that someone had the foresight to create a relatively easy hike around the lake. You can rent...More

Sylvan lake offers the opportunity to canoe or kayak. We our two boys with us ages 9 and 11 and were able to rent two kayaks and share them between the four of us. The lake is small- so an hour is more than adequate....More

Took the short trail around the lake after doing Harney Peak & Little Devils Tower. The lake is beautiful, clean and love the rock formations. Take a dip if you want. Actually watched a couple get married by the lack. It was a perfect background.

Normally, we go to Sylvan Lake as our starting point for hikes up Harney Peak (now called Black Elk Peak). However, our latest trip (September 2017) was my kids' (preschooler and baby) first trip to the Black Hills, so we skipped the strenuous hike this...More

Worth pulling over for whilst driving the SD 87 highway. The waters look pristine so would be very good for boating and swimming I'd expect.

This is a nice place to spend some time and boat if you can. Many hikes to enjoy also. Even if you only have a short time to walk around it is enjoyable.

We drove to Sylvan Lake and there was NO one around. It was a nice place to explore. We took our family picture around the lake and then went for a hike around the lake. It was a fun place to go and hike. There...More

What a nice alpine lake to stop after driving through the rock tunnel on the Needles Scenic Bypass on the way to Custer State Park. Lots of nice trout surfacing and being caught also. I walked to the small spillway and then through the rock...More

The Sylvan Lake Lodge has cabins to rent but it's not right on Sylvan Lake itself, but close by. Check it out, it's still an amazing location!

The campground we checked out did. I would recommend the stockade campgrounds or coolage campground for ease to maneuver an rv.

We were there the third week of June and it was too cold to swim. Mostly paddle boards and kayaks were all that was in the water
