Jewel Cave National Monument is home to one of the longest caves in the world. Offering an assortment of cave formations and recreational opportunities, many visitors are truly amazed by this underground wilderness. Most impressive is the fact that exploration and discovery continue to take place at this significant natural resource.

As part of the National Park Service, the monument offers four different types of cave experiences: Scenic Tour (1 hour and 20 minutes), Discovery Talk (20 minutes) Historic Lantern Tour (1 hour and 45 minutes), and Wild Caving Tour (3 to 4 hours). During the spring months, limited tour options are available. It is recommended that visitors check online for specific tour times or call the visitor center directly for park ranger assistance.

NOTE: At present, advanced reservations for cave tour tickets are not available in 2016. It is hoped that this service will be available by Memorial Day Weekend; however, until further notice, all cave tour tickets are being sold on a first come first serve basis.

I'm posting this as a bit of cautionary advice about how the Jewel cave tours work. To be brief, they are first come, first served, with no exceptions and no reservations. When my kids and I were in the area they were offering 3 tours a day, limited to 40 people each. We were staying in Hill City. I called... More

We are sorry to read about your situation and to learn that your family drove to the Monument ... only to find the cave tours filled to capacity. The Monument is working toward offering reservations in the future; however, this service is only planned for the summer months. We realize that this "limitation" may take some visitors by surprise. On... More

It's literally in the 40's on the cave tours, so dress accordingly. Tours are scheduled on a first come, first served basis so you have to plan and be prepared to wait. Getting there at opening time is your best bet. The cave formations (cave bacon!) and the briskly paced guided tour are well worth the time (just about an... More

Thank you for the great comments and for sharing some visitor "hints" with future guests. You are correct ... the cave is 49 degrees year round. A light jacket and/or coat is recommended. And yes, there are 723 stairs along the Scenic Tour route ... which makes the tour moderate to strenuous. With some good planning, visitors should find themselves... More

The scenic your was interesting and fun for my five year old and myself. The rangers were excellent. Eventhough we chose not to take the three year old on the tour, there was hiking outside to keep him occupied during the tour. Fun for everyone!

Thank you for the wonderful feedback! We are also happy to read that your family was able to take an outdoor adventure on one of the surface trails. If you ever have a chance to come back, make sure to get your kids engaged with the Junior Ranger (ages 5-12) and Pee Wee Ranger (ages 3-4) Programs. Awesome fun! More

We were able to make it to two National Monuments with caves on this trip to the Black Hills area. Caves are such fun and amazing. This one is very popular, and has limited number of tours this time of year, with a lot more scheduled in the busy summer. We had just missed one tour, but there was still... More

Thank you for the wonderful review, and the Monument is thrilled to read that your group enjoyed the visit. Furthermore, your feedback about limited tours is much appreciated. Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate everyone during the summer season. Because of this, we highly recommend advance planning ... and, your review makes this point even stronger. Best wishes with... More

We got there at 9:30 for the 10am tour, and it turned out to be a good thing since our tour sold out and they started booking the 2pm while we waited. So go early. This cave had several big open rooms that were pretty impressive, whereas Wind Cave has more narrow passages. A couple rooms the tour took us... More

My husband and I did a cave tour here last year. The hike was amazing and the formations are so cool! Lots of stairs, but we enjoy walking. We will definitely come back again. The trail guide was knowledgable and answered any questions. We had fun.

We were disappointed that tours were sold out several hours in advance and had to return on another day. Since we had a 5-yr old, we were only able to take the shortest tour where you see only one room. The visitor center was small, but had well-designed exhibits and we got more out of that than from the brief... More

Thank you for sharing your feedback on TripAdvisor related to Jewel Cave National Monument. We wanted to respond to the situation about kids under the age of 5 going on the Scenic Tour. This age restriction was lifted in mid-February; at present, visitors of any age can take part in the Scenic Tour ... as long as the individual can... More
