Jewel Cave National Monument is home to one of the longest caves in the world. Offering an assortment of cave formations and recreational opportunities, many visitors are truly amazed by this underground wilderness. Most impressive is the fact that exploration and discovery continue to take place at this significant natural resource.

As part of the National Park Service, the Monument offers four different types of cave experiences: Scenic Tour (1 hour and 20 minutes), Discovery Talk (20 minutes) Historic Lantern Tour (1 hour and 45 minutes), and Wild Caving Tour (3 to 4 hours). During the late winter and early spring seasons, limited tour options are available. It is recommended that visitors check online for specific tour times or call the visitor center directly for park ranger assistance.

NOTE: At present, advanced reservations for cave tour tickets are not available in 2017. It is hoped that this service will be available by Memorial Day Weekend; however, until further notice, all cave tour tickets are being sold on a first come first serve basis.

If you are planning on visiting both caves...go to Wind Cave first because you will want to save the BEST for last! We visited Jewel Cave first and we loved it! I'm not claustrophobic but Wind Cave could have made me. Jewel Cave has lots of stairs however we had someone with a cane that was able to navigate just... More

Arrived with just enough time to join the last trip of the day, which goes only to the first level. This was enough for me, though, as I know I would not have managed the walking and stair-climbing on the full tour. Our lovely guide was very knowledgeable about the caves, showed us the "sparkles" and answered questions. Would certainly... More

Don't miss the caves! The underground experience is just beautiful. We took 3 tours of this cave to see as much of it as possible. We did the Lantern Tour and it was enlightening! Every cave has its special features- this one is really big and colorful inside.Nice summer touring, you really get to cool off in the cave. A... More

It is pretty long drive out there from Rapid City. You need to make sure you give yourself a couple of hours to tour the place. Also make sure you get there early so you can get a tour without waiting a couple of hours.

This cave just sparkles! We took the Scenic tour. It is a 1 hour walking tour (involves stairs) around several rooms an passages through the cave. The walkway has rails to hold on to. We didn't find the walkways slippery, although they were wet in some places (wear shoes with good tread, this is not for flip flops). The formations... More

Explore Jewel cave via the scenic tour. The cave is continuing to be explored with mapping of new areas continuing. There are possibilities to help with that process if you are able. The rooms hold some interesting features. I suggest you take your own flashlight so you can see things better. Guide is good but if you are not in... More

One of my goals is to visit all the National Parks. Jewel Cave was a lot different than say other NP caves, but it was still very interesting.

Got there at 10 am on memorial day weekend . Got tour tickets for 130 PM. We took 2hour hike in hells canyon behind cave entrance before our tour. Tour Is a brisk walk for 62 yr old fat guy. Breath taking even at 49 degrees.

Don't let the 750 stairs stop you. This cave is worth seeing. An elevator takes you down, but from then on you are on secure, non-slip metal walkways and stairs that go up as well as down. Dress warmly. Ranger guided tours depart about every hour. You cannot explore on your own. Allow time for waiting after you get your... More
