The rock spirals along the road are more amazing with every turn. The road is very narrow so may not be for everyone. The tunnels are small and cut through the rock. We saw a tour bus go through and it only had a couple...More

We really enjoyed driving the Needles Highway in both directions. It had a lot of different scenic turnouts and was really beautiful. A MUST DO if you are traveling the area on motorcycles, but enjoyable in a car as well.

If you are touring the Black Hills a "must see" is the needles highway and through the needles eye tunnel.

Drive the Needles Highway, part of the peter Norberg Loop. You'll have to stop for pictures. Rocky spires, narrow tunnels through rock and one lane bridges dot this scenic highway in Custer State park. Take your time and plan 3 hours for the drive

We were so glad we went to see this. After seeing a postcard of the Needles Eye we thought well if we get time we will. So glad we did! It was amazing with the grouping of very large rocks all around the Needles Eye....More

We visited mid to late October and the weather, roads and scenery were simply amazing. And yes, motorcycles would be fine on these roads. Just remember, keep it slow.

For some reason I did not see your question in a timely manner, sorry I was not able to help.
Hi- we are trying to figure out the best way to cluster different attractions we are interested in while staying in the Custer/Keystone area (in August 18-21), in a way that will minimize crowds if possible, and prevent waits and back tracking. I realize we may not be after to get everything in, but we are hoping in 3-4 days that even with little kids most of it may be do-able. We would like to see afternoon+evening ceremony at Rushmore, 1880 train roundtrip to hill city, custer state park wildlife loop-needles eye-sylvan lake, bear country USA and reptile gardens, Wind cave natural entrance tour (if our 2 1/2 yr old could hack it-no stroller or back pack right?) or garden of eden tour, deadwood saloon re-enactment. We would also love to be able to kayak somewhere (newbies to that). After our stay here we were hoping to drive thru badlands on our way to De Smet SD. Any advice from those with experience would be great. Also anything else that shouldnt be missed. We were hoping to find a low cost cabin type situation, but right now just have comfort inn reservations in Custer. Still looking, but VRBO doesnt seem to be promising. (On tight budget, our group is two adults, then 13, 8, 4, and 2 1/2.). Also cheap good food if there are any suggestions.

Custer State park, Badlands and Mt Rushmore has plenty of jr ranger programs the kids can do and earn their badges. It kept my kids really engaged throughout the trip! I 2nd Kim D.'s recommendation to skip the bear country... More
