My 10 and 12 year old girls and I took the drive up Needles highway. Discovered accidentally the hike up to Cathedral Spires and absolutely loved it. Well worth the time spent. Bring water LOL

It was one of our easier hikes (distance) during our visit and one of the most beautiful. A hail storm changed our original plan to add this hike to our Black Elk (Haney) Peak. You can detour off trail 4 to spires and then return...More

Very strenuous hike, but well worth it. Glad we did it. The scenery was breathtaking. One of the best highlights of our Black hills adventure.

Great hike, great views! We have four kids ages 4-9 and they all were able to hike this trail and said this was one highlight of their trip. Recommended!

We hiked 1.5 miles to reach this clearing (note: I'm unable to attach a video) surrounded by the Cathedral Spires and experience sunshine, blue skies, hear rock climbers talk to each other and the wind coming, the sound of which is extraordinary. A bit scary...More

We hiked Trail 4 (Cathedral Spires) to Trail 9 (Harney Peak). The views are awe-inspiring. The hike to the Spires is fairly easy. I would highly recommend making the extra trek to Harney Peak if you make it to Cathedral Spires.

We started at Sylvan Lake, went up to Harney Peak on #9, came down #4 (less people) and took detour onto Cathedral Spires #4a. Big day of hiking but worth it. Challenging but certainly not undo-able for this 50+ average hiker.

Driving the Needles hwy to get to this trail is half the experience! Amazing! Trail was rated strenuous however my 2 kids and my mother did it and it was enjoyable. Beautiful views of the mountains and "needles" shooting up to the sky! Some steep...More

If you are traveling in Black Hills National Park or going to see Mount Rushmore don't miss the chance to see the Cathedral Spires. They are incredible. Take the Needles highway (be prepared for some very slim tunnels -- one car only, thinnest is just...More

We have traveled to the Black Hills many times and have never heard of bears being present or warned about. There are some isolated reports of black bears wandering into the area but those have been rare. We hike... More

The trail starts out without a lot of elevation change. That takes you to the base of some of the spires. From there the trail makes a short but steeper climb and then flattens out again as you head around the back of the... More
