We were in Mayrhofen in Feb, 2017, and followed noelrosie's advice to go to the Mayrhofen tourist info desk, and it was great! We described what we wanted (in this case: picturesque views, typical Austrian houses and farms, and animals), and they provided a map with the perfect route! Our day was beautiful and sunny, no snow on the trail,... More

I visited the tourist office for a map of the area and was given a small booklet of walking tours around Mayrhofen. The routes were graded as to distance and difficulty with an approximate time also given. I set out and was delighted to find beautifully maintained paths through the snow, clearly signposted and true to details in booklet and... More

The trails at the top of either of the major lifts (Penkenbahn & Lammabichl) are more 'ridge' walks than up/down hikes. That said, the vistas are spectacular, especially south facing. The Penkenbahn holds 30+ people. At the top of the lift there is a circular walk of about 2 kilometers with various viewing stations over the valley and into the... More

We took the Penkenbahn up to the top. All of the steepness is lower down. Once at the top the walking is pretty easy. There are many restaurants up there to take a break and have a beer and a snack. The views are worth the effort.

There is great walking in the Zillertal, and a good range of buses from the centre of Mayrhofen: but there are few decent trails descending into the town - you often end up wedged between roads for the last few hundred metres or so. They need more buses - there is a very unseemly scrum to board.

There are many wonderful walks in and around Mayrhofen. The walk from Schlegeis Reservoir to the Italian border is very enjoyable. Take the 4102 bus from Mayrhofen to Schlegeis and the walk is a 9 mile return trip. The walk is not difficult for reasonably fit people and is a well marked path. When reaching the Italian border , you... More

A frequent visitor to Mayrhofen over the last 20 years our ability to walk has changed but the walks are still suitable for us. There are many mountain huts to visit, some easy walking but others challenging. All are well sign-posted and the estimated times are fairly realistic. The 2 lifts mean that it's possible to gain some altitude and... More

The Stillup Valley is one of the most unspoilt valleys leading off from the end of the Zillertal valley at Mayrhofen. We caught a minibus from opposite the Europahaus at the bottom of Mayrhofen. They run at half-hourly intervals from 8.00am to about lunchtime, and again in the afternoon. Destination is the Grune Wand Hutte which is about 14km from... More
