The cable car at St Gilgen has been completely overhauled. New cable cars with wonderful 360 degree view. And new visitor areas at top and bottom. This is the first time we haven’t had to wit in any queues at all. There is a much better automated ticket system which helped to reduce any delays.
The views are really good and well worth a visit.

I used a short rain-free time during my stay at Wolfgangsee and took the gondola up to the Zwölferhorn.
These new gondolas are very comfortable and considerably larger than the old ones (were rather canned). What I wonder is, did the original cable car float over such high supports?
The alpine pasture upstairs was unfortunately closed and the "glass house" restaurant of the cable car did not look at me.
Too bad there is no stopover, because on the way you see a beautiful, managed alpine pasture, where it would certainly be wonderful to stop.
Unfortunately it soon started raining again, so I drove down.

Amazing experience! I'd never been in a cable car before, but we passed this one on the way to Hallstatt and knew we had to come back and try it.
The gondolas are nice and small (8 people max) so you don't feel packed in and we managed to get an entire gondola for just the two of us both up and down! The ride was smooth and the views all the way up were amazing!
Then we got to the top and I was just blown away (not literally)! So much snow! And incredible views of St. Gilgen, the lakes and the surrounding peaks.
There was also a lovely, cosy restaurant that served great gluhwein!
One of the best things we did in our entire stay here! It might seem a bit pricey, but those views (and the cable car experience, if you're new to it, like me) were definitely more than worth it!

Enjoyed the cable car ride to the wolf something top of the mountain. Small cable cars and a little tight with 4 adults but we enjoyed it. Not a lot of people waiting so no long line. Restaurant at the top of the mountain. Recommend and would do it again.

Spectacular view! I hiked for an hour before 10 am and climbed the steep way to the cross. Great for the whole family even with strollers. The cable cars are also wheel chair accessible. Restrooms and restaurants are available on top with great views. I was there for at least 3 hours. Great place to sit on one of the benches and eat some snacks. Paragliding was also an option. I saw one take off near the cross area. As you descend, if it’s not busy, you and your party can have the cable car to yourself while enjoying the view!

We had a fantastic time at Zwolferhorn over the ~4 hours or so that’s e spent there. The cable car station was quite empty, easy ride up to the mountain & then you can enjoy the views from there. We did the trails from there but in particular do the short climb to where the cross is for the best 360 degrees view of the place. You can get down from the other side & walk to the right side of the cable car station & relax on the rocking chairs there while enjoying the view. At the end, we had a great meal Das Zwolfer to cap off a great morning.

What an amazing trip by cable car. We travelled from Salzburg on bus 150 taking around 40 minutes. We left Salzburg on a sunny morning but as we got nearer to St Gilgen the mist was quite thick so we did think twice about spending €50 going up in the cable car. However, when we went into the station there was a screen showing live footage from the top......all was sunny and clear. So, we began our ascent through the mist and low clouds seeing just houses and trees below but then we rose above into beautiful sunlight and the views were stunning with peak after snowy peak appearing above the clouds. The ascent takes the best part of 15 minutes and eventually you get to the top station. Here there is a welcome and warm cafe serving food and drinks at very good prices. There are various viewing platforms and flat snow and ice covered pathways leading up to the cross. The views are incredible and more so that day as the low cloud in the valley made it all quite surreal when looking down. We could see one of the lakes far below near Fuschl. The cable cars themselves look quite old fashioned but this I think adds to the attraction. We will definitely do this trip again next time we visit.

We paid our 22 euros and hopped into the cable car. At the top, we were awed by the views. Simply gorgeous! There was a tiny Advent market at the top, not too far from Franz's hut. You can climb some stairs to take you to platforms where the views are even better. There was also a snow-covered trail that led to a point where you had 360' views.
So thankful we had a beautiful day to enjoy the amazing views! Wow!

Well, up you go; flexing your muscles and so fit ! you're going to Mullah this mountain; easypeezy!
You bail out at the top, have a quick beer and maybe a snack at the bar, watch the hang gliders for a wee while whilst admiring the glorious view of all the Salzkammergut, the Wolfgangsee below and the Schafberg over on the other side of the lake. Right, now for the journey down! So, over the back of the mountain, and the day we did it there were a pair of Golden Eagles circling high overhead and down through the meadows. Tinkling cow bells, gently running water into the drinking troughs, bright blue gentian and other alpine meadow plants everywhere, and absolutely nobody else to share the joy. On we went, till we came across a little hut with a group of senior Austrians from St Gilgen, all in Tyrolean dress, and out for a sing-song. So, we had yodel songs and cider as we lay out on the grass and regained our spirits for the next leg of the journey,. On we went; goats everywhere, bird song and rushing water all around until we finally reached the valley floor. Front of legs now in agony so phone call to the Billroth to ask Peter to come and rescue us. Much laughter on the other end of the phone, but eventually the cavalry arrived. Billroth, shower, dinner and bed. End of a glorious day. , .

If you go here from Salzburg, don't spend all that money on a tour. Just take the public bus out of Salzburg toward St Gilgena..very cheap...took bout 25 minutes..nice drive through the Alps...beautiful scenery. Get off at St Gilgen, walk around the beautiful town, talk to the lady at the restaurant near the cable car...very nice person.
After the great cable car ride..well worth the money..get back on the bus and go to Bad Ischl..beautiful little town.
If you watch the movie Sissi about Queen Sophia of Austria, and take the tour of her rooms at Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, you get a nice background for this area, which was where she would go to 'get away from it all." Movie has shots of the area you will visit here. Well worth it!

Is it feasible to hike a route to the top? We're all young enough and in shape and visiting the Salzburg area in a couple weeks looking to do some hike.
Written May 6, 2018
There is a hiking route from St Gilgen to the top of the Zwoelferhorn. The total ascent is around 900m and length around 3km so it is a decent walk uphill and a fairly steep gradient.

Because we're arriving from vienna and we need to drop off our bags at nearby St Wolfgang, we will probably go up Zwolferhorn at around 2:30-3pm in early April (daylight will be a bit shorter than the summer).
We would like to hike down but is it dangerous to hike down around dusk? Thank you for your answers in advance!
Written March 13, 2018
If you're reaching up even at 3 pm and if you enjoy the views in minimal time, in my opinion it might be too late to start hiking down at that time. I am no expert so recommend wait and see what a local expert would say. Thanks

Hi,
Can you please tell me the operating timing of this ropeway? I am travelling on April 23 and 24, 2018 to Salzburg and would like to know if I can target the ropeway around 4 pm in the afternoon. Also, would there be snowy peaks around that time?
Thanks

We plan to come by the bus on a stopover to Hallstatt. Is there a locker or place we can leave our luggage while we ride up the cable car?
Written September 22, 2017
I do not know the answer, but I would guess yes.

Hi, is the cable car currently shut? We have not seen any cabs go up for the last few days (we are across the valley), wondered if it was damaged in the recent storms as we may drive over tomorrow to go up. Not seen anything on Google, and tourist info is now shut! Thanks!
