beautiful abbey with romantic ruins

Beautiful abbey with romantic ruins. It is situated in a lovely valley. And the monks make and sell their own Trappist beer which is definitely a must to try

Walk between the old ruins, make sure you don't miss the museum in the back. On the go grab a pack of their famous and very good beer... We've also got some of their cheese but did not find it particularly good and worth the high price. For that money they could offer some free samples and than let people... More

Looks beautiful from the outside. Didn't realise you only walk amongst the ruins. Secondly don't understand why dogs are not allowed, certainly better behaved than some children, and are allowed in almost every restaurant. Why can they not have a glass wall between visitors and the beer making process, still complies with health and safety. Would make it more interesting.... More

We found Orval Abbey by chance on our way from Belgium to Switzerland, but then spent the whole day there. It is an exciting historical site well restored, but still preserving a flair of ancient ruins with a great history and a lot of interesting exhibitions. Suggest to take an audio guide if you would like to learn moe about... More

History, religion, beer, what a combination. Question still open, what was first - will to restore religious site or start to brew trappiste. Nice place, worth to visit every time when you go after the orval beer. Best time to visit, definitely spring, when everything is blooming.

Interesting old site, definitely worth a visit if you are nearby. It would be even more interesting if one could also visit the newer part of the abbey...which is not the cas unless you stay there..

Situated in the Ardenes, this is an impressive Abbey and Cistercian Monastery with the monastery area kept private. An interesting peaceful atmosphere as one strolls through this lovely property amongst the ruins and for a small fee visit the museum housed there. Enjoy the Trappiste beer brewed. It must have been a grand property in its heyday. Well worth a... More

For 6 Euro you can see the ruines, the gardens, the beermuseum and the herbal garden. It is extremely quiet and peacefull. I wish we could have visited the brewery and cheese factory. In the shop you can buy 2 x 12 Orval beers per person, but in the abbey itself we were told you could get 4 x 12... More

Great job of blending the historic past with the modern now. Enjoyed the walk through the ruins. Beautiful grounds with enough facts thrown in to make it interesting. Then down the street to the beer. Very much worth the effort to get there. I mean Orval, on tap!

This hidden gem is situated along the French/Belgium border, about 40 minutes from Verdun. The abbey shop sells beer by the case - €20 for 12 bottles with a limit of four cases per person. You can also find a selection of glassware, abbey cheese, and literature. The monetary ruins are spectacular! Included in the €6 entry you also get... More
