Peaceful and bright interior and beautiful walking around the church area. You can sit where you like and rest or pray. About a kilometer walk to the hill is the sighting point. Clean WC and lots of shops with souvenirs around.

We did not spend much time here, as a christening was on. We went back in after the service had finished, but spent just a short time looking around as we only had an hour’s stay in Medjugorje.
I liked the look of the exterior, but inside was quite clinical - modern with no atmosphere. There was a lovely statute of The Virgin Mary though.

Basic Roman Catholic Church (quite bare inside) with extensive mass schedule for pilgrims. Attended French-language mass with 11 priests and 1 deacon presiding. Dozens of confessionals on both sides of the church (outside) and large outdoor mass area at rear.

The church has 3 main parts – the actual church itself, which is somewhat small, the outside church, which is behind the church and has seating for approx. 5000 people and the large building called the yellow hall. During the day, Mass is said in the church and yellow hall, in a variety of languages (check the schedule to find the time/location for your language) and the evening Mass, which is in the outside area, is in Croatian. The Rosary is before the evening Mass and adoration is after the evening Mass. Note: Next to the Yellow Hall is a small kiosk and from there, you can rent translators. They cost 10 euros and you can keep it as long as you are in Medjugorje – you just need to write down when you plan to return the translator. Once you purchase one, when the evening Mass starts, you can put it on your channel, and you can listen to Mass in your language. We were told that a lot of healing miracles have occurred in Medjugorje. To be officially recognized as healing miracles, they need to be fully documented, which is a long process, involving all past medical records, etc. Anyways, we were told that approx. 90% of those documented cases, happened during the evening Mass. The inside of the church itself is, of course, beautiful, in particular the large statue of Mary, but the altar is fairly plain – more of a modern church than the types of churches one usually sees in neighboring Europe. To the left of the church, outside, are the Reconciliation booths. There are several closed booths as well as several priests with chairs in the open. You check the signs to find which one is in your language and wait in that line. I counted approx. 25 priests hearing confessions in the evening (every day) when we were there. Be sure to take advantage of this blessed Sacrament, as it is simple to do so at Medjugorje. In fact, I went twice within the short time I was there, as I remembered additional sins to confess. Also further to the left on the church grounds is an Adoration small chapel and two gift shops - a smaller one next to the Adoration chapel and a much larger one across the walk way from the smaller gift shop. On the right of the church, around a corner, is where one can light a prayer candle. Note that you likely need to bring something to light your candle as they did not have anything to transfer the flame from a lit candle to an unlit one. Further down is a building with restrooms and further beyond that are a set of large, beautiful mosaic pictures that practically glow at night, Stations of the Cross and the very large metal statue of Jesus. They say that water drips from the knee of Jesus and there is no explanation on how this is possible, as the statue is solid bronze. When we visited, there was a long line of people touching and wiping the statue. So we did not see the water. In the front of the church is a large courtyard area with plenty of water fountains for filling water bottles and also a beautiful statue of Mary. All in all, this is a very blessed place and I look forward to returning.

So much to do here at this parish. Masses are said multiple times each day, confessions held in many languages, educational lectures available to attend, gift store to purchase souvenirs and a beautiful place to find places to retreat and recharge your spirit.

St. James is the Catholic church in Medjugorje, place of pilgrimage for millions of Catholics, where mass is said throughout the day in different languages - as well as rosary, confessions, etc. It is now air-conditioned in the main church, but note that masses are often celebrated outside in the back, in the open air, where many more can be accommodated. Confessions occur in multiple languages on the side of the church. Note: mass times and other programs vary by season - summer (June 1st - August 31st) vs rest of the year.

Mass Schedule (summer time) - as of summer 2019 (best to double check once there)

Mon-Saturday 7:30 am Croation mass - all year round
Then, masses thereafter in various languages (12 noon French - summertime)
18 h (19 h - summertime) last mass of the day

Sunday & Feast Days
8 Croatian mass, 11, 18 h (19 h - summertime)
(check for specific mass times for other languages)

- Rosary 1 hour before the evening mass
- Confessions check times (during the summertime - there were confessions being heard at least an hour before the evening mass - might have been going on beforehand)

My mum was itching to visit Medjugorje and to pray in its most important church, so we went there. This church is quite modern, but interesting to see and easily recognizable by the two bell towers.
