This is a well organised and explained museum containing excavated finds from ruse and the area around, from the prehistoric period to victorian times.
There is a good amount of displays for prehistoric and Roman artefacts, with less on Thracian discoveries.
There is also a good section on the goths and medieval times.
All areas have lots of information in English and artefacts are well displayed. There are seats at regular intervals.
At only 5 leva (2.50 euro) each it is well worth it, and gives a good impression of the history of the area. There are also leaflets in english to buy about the local historical sights and trinkets.
The staff and very helpful and speak good English.

Bulgaria has a network of regional museums and this one, in Ruse, is one of 11 such regional museums. Housed in the neoclassical Battenberg Palace, built in 1882, the museum was established in 1904. Ruse being the fifth largest city in Bulgaria, the Regional Historical Museum has a surprisingly extensive collection, said to contain over 140,000 items. This part of Eastern Europe has been continuously inhabited for millennia, so the archaeological findings are extensive and cover multiple historical time periods. The collection at this museum starts with prehistoric objects, tools, weapons and pottery. Developing art skills are shown in gold and silver platters, vases and containers. Remains of Thracian, Roman and Byzantine civilizations make room for Ottoman and more recently, modern Bulgarian cultures. all these have left important traes of their presence and dominance. Satrting with the ROmans, there are traces of visual arts: ceramics, frescoes, sculptures and clothing accessories. Coins from the multiple dominant governments are brought together in cogent order. Armor, shields, weapons of all sorts complete the military history, while books, documents and other permanent witnesses to history take their rightful place.

The museum offers more that you could expect. There are 2 full floors that go through different stages and areas in history, focused on the regional highlights. The museum is modernised. The fee is 5 leva, but the lady does not give tickets - corruption!

We liked this museum better than the ecomuseum/aquarium which had the same admission price (10 lev with a 5 lev special price for seniors). Many of the signs were in both Bulgarian and English but some areas were only in Bulgarian. We have seen much better pottery and glass exhibits at other museums, but the coins were particularly interesting.

There are so many interesting exhibits and sections. The architecture of the museum itself is so impressive. I spent nearly 4 hours there! You could easily spend an entire day here, and don't miss The Eco Museum & Aquarium! The staff speaks English and all exhibits have description in English.
Highly recommended!

Came here as part of tour group. Well maintained but can't say I was overexcited. Our tour guide brought the history alive. Enjoyed video on Rock Churches and Monastery which then resulted in us booking excellent private tour

Glad we decided to visit to this museum during our short stay. We have seen quite a few across europe, and this little museum was well worth a visit. Interesting displays with good explanations in english. Allowed to take photos (can't remember if it was a fee). Paid a small fee for a tour - tour guide was excellent.

A beautiful building with a delightful fountain in front of the impressive facade. History of Ruse dates back to the 6th century

It' a 15-30 minutes walk, one floor is with ancient artefacts from the region, the second covers some specific periods of history.
Staff do not speak English but many exhibits have English description.

A fabulous, small museum. Yes, you do need to be interested in History and Archaeology to enjoy an Archaeology museum. Wonderful display, good explanation, and very inexpensive entrance fee. Loved it for about two hours.
