I took the tour through Kalaupapa/Kalawao last week. My two friends and I elected to hike in and out...were between the ages of 22 and 25 and pretty avid hikers - we got down the hill in about 50 minutes (with a 5 minute break...More

We were hiking and it isn't that bad. If you have no health limitations, you will manage. You don't need that much water with you, as you may refill your bottles down there. We, and some other hikers too, got some missleading info about checking-in...More

We originally had a booking for a mule ride down to Kalaupapa, but then we were informed (without reason) that we can‘t go down by mule and have to hike. We fortunately decided to do this exhausting (only upwards, downwards was rather easy thanks to...More

This was always something that i wanted to do. My husband and I hiked down during a misty day--the hike was a little slippery but well worth the effort. The trail is well maintained. The visit was a lifetime experience. Our guide reminded us that...More

A beautiful and steep trail leads you to this amazing park at the leper colony. It overlooks the blue ocean and green mountains. Whether you go by hike or mule, you should go. If I hiked, I would go at dusk for the beautiful trail...More

Kalaupapa is worth the effort or expense to get there. The history is very interesting and the views are amazing. It’s a tough hike—prepare well for it—but, it is beautiful!

We flew into Kalaupapa with Makani Kai Air from the island of Oahu. They handled all the visitor permits as well as the arrangements for the required guide to meet us at the very small Kalaupapa airport. Possibly the most important fact of the visit...More

Highly recommend touring Kalaupapa - fascinating and tragic piece of history. We called Father Damien Tours directly to book the tour and hiked down the trail. It took us 90 minutes to get down and a little bit longer on the way back up. The...More

We hiked down and met Father Damien Tours at the bottom. The hike is not so bad, just a bunch of stairs. The trailhead is easy to drive right by! Oddly enough, the trailhead is marked ' Palau state park.' We arrived a little before...More
