We stumbled on to this road, I've heard of it, but we had already seen the island from an air tour 2 days prior, didn't have any interest in driving on it, however GPS, directed us this way back to our hotel shortest route I guess(only I didn't read ahead and see saddle road!), we only had 14%cell phone service... We took this road at night, so I can't really talk about the views, but the road is well maintained. There is a big section of construction where you are driving on very bumpy gravel road. Our trip across was April 18th and not sure how long the construction will last. Just take it slow and you will get there!... More

I think the car rental companies are still telling people that they can't get through with a smaller car but that is strictly untrue. The road construction is completed with the exception of three or four miles near Hilo. Otherwise, the road is smooth and quick. Even what hasn't been paved is better than the gravel roads we have in... More

Let me start by saying that the rental car company we got our car from LIED to us! They said that we would not be allowed to drive on the Hilo end of the Saddle Rd because only 4 wheel drive vehicles were allowed to go on it! Totally NOT true! They suckered us into an upgraded vehicle which cost... More

Fastest was across from KO na to Hill side of island. Cross between the 2 big volcanoes. Hill side has some significant road construction, down to gravel and rough, but still the quicker option.

Not much to see on the drive. Major construction going on, but the drive will be much faster once all of the new pavement is finished in the construction zone. Had about a 15 minute wait for the pilot car.

This road helps you save time when you want to get to the Hilo side. It saves nearly 2.5 hours than going around the island. I do recommend going early over as the clouds can form later in the day and you could be up in them at times. The road is wide enough but take it easy if you... More

Last visit was 12 years ago. This time the road is all paved and easy. No services. Beautiful views!

If you don't need to drive all the way around North, or South, this is an excellent way to cut across. There is still construction, but nothing like I read about in my initial reviews. You can now use the renatl car on this road!
