and garden in the shade (and the sun too, to paraphrase The Beatles). Well organized and articulated information about octopus habitat and challenges. This truly is (at the octopus’s discretion) a “hands on” interactive experience, as they may choose to wrap their arms around your fingers and wrist. Appropriate for all, fun and educational outing.

Surprised to get a review request. Our tour of the farm was cancelled. I’m sure there was a reason. We were looking forward to the tour.

These octopi are stars! If you're in the area, do this tour. No...make a special trip to this area to do this tour. The staff are friendly and informative, the octopi are well cared for, the experience is educational yet maximizing time with the animals, and the interaction with the octopi is even more fun than we had hoped. You really appreciate these animals even more after seeing them up close and getting to interact with them! 2 of them wanted to come home with us, but unfortunately we had to say goodbye.

We loved learning about octopi and having the opportunity to feed them was such fun. Our group had small children. families to retirees and everyone had smiles on their faces and were laughing out loud. Our three guides/biologists were quite knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend for a unique experience!

Super fun bucket list check off for me. The girls were great in explaining all about the day octopus and what they are studying. Was wonderful to meet Dani, Carmel, and I am so sorry I forgot your name but I love your face! You helped me with Gidget!
I feel like I must not have read the small print because you get to actually phyisically interact with these little cuties. Some are really shy and some want to be your BFF. You gotta stop by and see what these girls are up to and learn about our sticky limed friends.
Super cute gift shop and there's even a little beach to scope out down the street. Not a swimming beach.
I can't recommend this little farm enough. Wonderful people and wonderful little ocean animals.

This was a great tour. The ability to directly interact with an adult octopus was awesome!! I could have stayed there for hours with my hands in the tanks. I highly recommend this for parents with kiddos to expose them to an amazing sea creature. But be aware, younger ones may get a bit frightened as the tentacles reaching out to explore you can be scary. I wish the research team all the best getting the breeding program fully operational as that will be a significant accomplishment. Thanks, I rate this as one of my favorite activities while on the Big Island. Will do again next visit for sure.

So interesting to hear what they've learned about these octopuses & helping them survive. We enjoyed interacting with them: feeling their tentacles wrap around our fingers, watching them change colors, seeing them intrigued by toys, & even feeding them shrimp! What a fun opportunity!

Does everybody get to touch the octopus?

They do their best to ensure that everyone gets to touch an octopus, but, as with any live animal adventure or encounter, there's no guarantee.
They do allow plenty of time for everyone to take a turn. You might have to wait a bit and then move on for someone else to participate, but I'd be surprised if you don't get to touch one at all.

What does the Kanaloa do with the creatures? Do they sell them or return them to the ocean?

They are trying to breed octopus in captivity so they can provide an alternative solution to the overharvesting that is happening in the wild. Specifically, there is such a high demand for octopus in the culinary world, they’re researching whether or not it is possible to have a successful captivity-breeding program.

Did anyone for this tour while on the Norwegian cruise? Would they pick you up if you are on the cruise?

they don't have any pick up service. you have to arrange your own transportation. also they have limited hours. call them or email them. they will return your call in due time.

Are you wheel chair accessible?

It's small building. The guide stood on the steps to give a talk, and some of the octopuses are in tanks outside, which you could see, but I don't think the building itself, where there is other stuff, is wheelchair accessible...
