Cool example of a community coming together to work on something worthwhile. The harvests are free to whoever comes to harvest. You can walk in and take what you want (when you want)— no questions asked.

The Beacon Hill Food Forest is just down the hill from the park. Lately they have been expanding it (the new part is still a work in process) Everything is starting to wake up in the gardens. Even if there's not currently a lot to forage it's still nice to walk around.

This is an urban gardening area. Seattle has over 80 "P-Patch" public gardens all around town. This is P-Patch on steroids. Some folks have their own 10x10 plot that they take care of, and then there is large area that is kept up cooperatively. There are fruit trees and lots of vegetable plots that are open to the community. The planted area gets bigger every year.
This is wonderful and admirable urban feature.

If you are a farmer or gardener, and have heard of concept of permaculture go to the Beacon Hill Food Forest on the west side of Jefferson Park and see it in action. A food forest grows layers of edible plants and this one has grown a community also. Good signage, and great inspiration.

Beacon Hill Food Forest is a community run urban forest garden. My boyfriend and I stopped on our way from the airport to the city to check it out. We found an oasis of food free to anyone. There were golden raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries, fruit trees and vegetables of all kinds. I wish there were more food forests like this scattered throughout the US. Check out their website to drop in for a work day or swing by for a snack and to learn about how forest gardening works.
