this is the Italy we don't like.
Thursday 11 April at 6.22pm we entered and they told us that they were about to close and that we would have just over an hour to visit. It's OK for us.
When paying by card they tell us "sorry but we have already closed the card payment". So, in the meantime, if the visit is open, the possibility of paying in all ways must be given. And then if one is in good faith and wants to help the tourist, he politely points to the nearest ATM and says something like "we are waiting for you, even if you are delayed for 2 minutes it doesn't matter". We stayed here in the late afternoon of 12-08-24 and after visiting the old town and the cathedral we arrived late for the visit of the Swabian Castle which is part of an imposing defensive system erected by Frederick II of Swabia to protect the Kingdom of Sicily. It is close to the sea and for this reason, the shallow waters, make it very safe from attacks by sea. To visit

Visit to the Castle very interesting and recommended.
Instead, I invite you to be very careful when purchasing items at the reception.
I bought a book about Frederick II, attracted by the cover, I paid no attention to the fact that it was written in German.
The saleswoman, kind and helpful, even phoned the managers to help me, but nothing!
Non fanno cambi…mi devo tenere un libro in tedesco che non leggerò!
Deny the possibility of change, never seen anywhere!
Inconcepibile!

We visit this Castle on 17.02.20, and it does have a nice external view.
The side exposed to the sea offers a good prespective and some nice photos
Nothing of great importance to see inside.
It is well located just next to the Cathedral.

If you like castles this is a really great one because you get to see basically the whole thing. There is a brief video with English subtitles but not much signage after that. When I went in June 2022 I was the only one there so it was cool to have a whole castle to myself.

After the visit to the castle, reflect on the countless quantity of archaeological sites and assets present in Italy. The castle is worth a visit inside. As often happens however, the presence of some waste makes us reflect on the level of civic education of the visitors!

Unique hisotrical structure 800 years old. Served as prison for some of the Red Brigade people recently but now restored partly and will be restored continuously.

The castle is big and beautiful form outside. Inside is empty. You walk through the empty rooms. There is nothing to see beside the sea.

Really disappointed with this so called castle, it was completely modern inside, had been done up with clean new walls and windows everywhere and the rooms were set up more like conference rooms with modern chairs everywhere. No fun castle features, no info inside or exhibits and nothing to explore, not even a good view so don't waste 3 euros going inside. If you want to go to a cool castle go to Castel del Monte!

Trani is a very pretty place with a lovely marina and historic cathedral and castle. The castle is most interesting having been built by Fredrick II who was a prolific constructor castles in Puglia in 1200s. This castle has seen a range of uses including a major upgrade and changes in 16th century when cannon and muskets became part of warfare. Later the castle became a prison before being restored - it is under major restoration during our visit. Definitely buy an audio guide as it tells you lots of history. Recommended if you come to Trani.
