Attended the lollipop series concert for young children with my 20 month old grandson and his parents and his grandma. It is a fantastic idea to have this to give the children an appreciation of music but is not really geared to 20 month olds. The theater itself was very nice. Will definitely bring him again when he is a little older.

Just saw a concert version of Carmen this past weekend in the Carpenter Theatre at the Dominion Arts Center. The décor is unique and interesting. Clouds are suspended overhead with stars twinkling in a night sky above them. This 1928 theatre has been refurbished, so the seats are comfortable and the acoustics are great, too. In the lobby are a couple snack bars with coffee and other drinks, with two more snack bars upstairs. I highly recommend seeing the Richmond Symphony here- or any other group that is performing.

Even though the performance was what set my visit off to the Carpenter Theatre, the space itself is absolutely beautiful, and was the perfect backdrop for a powerhouse performance.

My review is on the Dominion Arts Center itself. I am no judge of good opera other than to say that I loved the music and the singing in Lucia Di Lammermoor,
This is a beautiful building that really makes a statement when you walk up.The theater was built in 1928 and has been wonderfully maintained - at least from a cosmetic stand point. They have concessions during intermissions that consist of boxed candy, wine, soda and beer. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I will say that there wasn't an usher stationed right by the stairs to the balcony. That would have been very helpful because those stationed at the doors on the bottom floor were busy seating people and if you've never been there before, one stationed at the base of the stairs would have been helpful.
I highly recommend going to any show here. The sound is wonderful and the building is beautiful. Oh, for parking, there is a lot right across the street and a public parking garage two blocks away for $7.

RVA Smooth Jazz night was a Blast!! Local songstress Desiree Roots kicked it off with her lovely vocals. Old School Soul & Funk Master Tom Brown raised the butts out of their seats with his tantelating trumpeting & "Funking for Jamaica!" Legendary Roy Ayers is still exciting crowds with "Everybody Loves the Sunshine!" If that weren't enough...Boney James and his sexy, sexy Saxophone and band was on the floor dancing, playing, & slaying those of us who fell in love with him and his CD!!! WoW! Beautiful venue, architecture, plenty of convenient parking for $10 everywhere nearby, short lines for drinks...it was Fabulous!!! Check Groupon for discounts, buy & come early for a 2 min walk. Check your tickets.

We went to the Richmond Symphony performance of Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky last night and were thoroughly delighted. I don't remember the last time I went for a performance of this type, so this was quite a treat. A guest violinist, Jinjoo Cho, was the hallmark of the Tchaikovsky piece. She was captivating, and her music flawless.
Next, came the Stravinsky piece. I preferred this piece because of its many "layers"..highlighting more than just the strings. Sadly (for me), we were down on the floor, four rows from the stage, so I couldn't see the percussion groups (but obviously, the fourth row is **nice.**)
Formerly known as the Carpenter Center, the theater itself is one of the group of theaters that includes the Altria Theater, Virginia Repertory Theater, and more. It has been renovated over the years, but has tried to keep its charm. All in all, it allows Richmond to be the center for arts that it is.
