Scacciadiavoli is one of the oldest winery in the area of Montefalco. The name Scacciadiavoli can be traced back to an episode of exorcism of the seventeenth century, reported by Johannes de Rupescissa in the Treaty on the Quintessence.

The story tells about a young woman possessed by the devil, to which an exorcist give her drink the local red wine, succeeding in drive out the devil.

The event gave its name to the village, still exists, appropriately called Scacciadiavoli. In the mid-nineteenth century, Prince Ugo Boncompagni Ludovisi built the winery, which is still functional and rational; From that moment, given the monumental size of the building, the site is called Localita Cantinone (large cellar).

In the middle of the twentieth century, the grandfather of the current owners, Amilcare Pambuffetti, acquired ownership of the company, which covers an area of one hundred and thirty acres, of which twenty vineyards.

The productions are typical of the area: Sagrantino (15 hectares), Red (12 hectares) and Grechetto (3 hectares), Montefalco Bianco (1 hectare) and Chardonnay (1 hectare).

I have made Wine Tours in Montefalco wine regione and Cantina Scacciadiavoli has been one of my favorites. Great hospitality, professional staff, good wines and antipastos. All my clients have agreed that this cantina is worthwhile visiting when travelling in Umbria.

We visited Scacciadiavoli on July 20th and enjoyed every minute. We were welcomed by Francesca, which was extremely pleasant and kind. She showed us around, took us to the cool wine cellars, explained about the wine making process, the different kinds of wine they produced, and the history of the place. She was knowledgeable and interesting, and seemed proud of... More

I was extremely impressed with Francesca's gracious hospitality and knowledge, as well as a truly delicious (and very generous) tasting of excellent wines. This winery is a perfect way to experience the different traditional Umbrian wines, paired well - and also some unique gems such as their savory, dry sparkling rose from 100% sagrantino grapes. Must visit if you're in... More

Noted - I am not a wine expert, however, the tour in the overall was a great experience especially for beginners. The host guided us through the wine making process which was very interesting! And finally, we sat in a round table to taste the wines and eat some local food, it's recommended to do it instead if just tasting... More

We were 1/2 late for our appointment and they were very accommodating. The young gal who hosted us was great but we only liked the sparkling wines they had (bianco and rose). It is the oldest winery in Montefalco so it is cool from that regard.

Our tour group stopped here yesterday for wine tasting, tour and lunch. Francesca was a gracious and warm hostess and spoke perfect English. She had us laughing and enjoying ourselves right off the bat. The vineyards were flaming red with autumn color and there was plenty of time for picture taking among the vines. We toured all four floors of... More

We called ahead to make a reservation to visit this winery (recommended otherwise there may be no one there). All of the wines that we tried were fantastic and lucky for us, it was not busy so we received a thorough explanation of each one. The pours are quite generous so make sure you have a good driver!

Young fourth generation clearly enjoying creating a wonderful overall experience. Very interesting 150 year old winery. Having the wine maker lead the tour certainly marks this out as more authentic and informed than other 'wine tourism destinations'. Great respect for traditions and care in making wine - pity is not quite top standard. Food and wine well matched given family's... More
