If you've read Elie Weisel you will immediately be moved to be in the at which he was born and spent his early years. Read "All Rivers Run to the Sea" before you visit for background information. The docent, Alex, was excellent. So sad that Jewish history in Romania is not well known. This small house contains a lot of information and is arranged as it was before WWII when a thriving Jewish population lived in Sigheti. Highly recommend.

It's a good place to visit to find out more about Elie Wiesel and also about Jewish culture. I also think it can be improved to help people realize what the Jewish community was in Sighetu Marmatiei before the deportation. It's sad what happened then, but it's part of our history.

The Eli Wiesel house is of such importance---Maramures had a significant Jewish population before WWII, but sadly no longer. The museum provides important history on Jewish life before the War and information how the Jewish population was targeted and deported; these are lessons which must never be forgotten. The museum is fairly small, and a visit would not take more than an hour, but the house packs a big punch in terms of its message. Most of the signs are in english and Romanian, but not all. Highly recommend this museum if you are in Maramures---it will def leave you thinking and wondering how to make this world a better place.

This is the house where Elie Wiesel grew up. Now it's a small museum dedicated to the once numerous and learned Jewish community of the Maramures, to which his family belonged.
Here you see their furniture, pictures, ritual objects and books, and you realise how much this community once contributed, in so many fields. And how much was lost when it was destroyed.
For everyone, not only those with a special interest in history or literature.
There's a small fee. The young curator when I went spoke good English.

Elie Wiesel died a few weeks before we got to visit his home. It felt like an honor to walk among these walls.

We visited here with 3 kids that were not interested in the house as they were hungry. My 11 year old is fascinated by the Holocaust, but didn't really engage with the exhibits and we have been to Ann Frank's house, Mauthausen, and other rememberance sights. I have read Night, which made it more interesting to visit, but I was also disappointed by the very small historical write up about Jews in Sighet and their deportation. I think I would have enjoyed a lot more information about the Wiesel family and perhaps objects gathered from the time period to tell a story of a family caught in a horrendous time in history. I did like being able to walk through the house and go into the cellar which had photographs of actual town's people in the concentration camps and after liberation. It would be amazing if some locals who had lived during the time could docent there. I am proud that Sighet found it important enough to preserve the house and hope that others will support its continuation even after the death 3 weeks ago of Mr. Wiesel. Don't miss the restaurant that connects with its backyard.

This, of course, commemorates acts of unspeakable human evil. But, at the same time, it is a memorial to a vibrant community that lived and prospered in this corner of Europe until the Holocaust. The house is spacious and light and to me, it felt serene. To quote the cliche, those who do not know their history are likely to repeat it. Strongly recommended if in Maramures.

For me the visit was emotional as my family was from Sighet and perished in the Holocaust. I recommend taking a local guide if you share the same interest.

The building displays the way of life of the Jews in this area, including typical period furniture and general history of the Jewish community and the area around from the beginning of the 20th century. It was interesting learning more about the Jewish fate and about Eli Wiesel's history.

A small memorial to Elie Wiesel, who was born in the town of Sighetu. Set in his childhood house, the few rooms give a brief guide to his life and the that of Jews in this part of Romania during WW2.
Worth a visit, though you will probably need only about 30 minutes. It closes at four, so get there esrly.
