If you're staying at any of the resorts on the Costa del Sol, for a couple of euros take the excellent Spanish railway (20-minute intervals) to one of the three stations coming out from Malaga and change on to the hourly C-2 line into the hills to visit the lovely small town of Alora.
Don't do as we did and walk up the steep hill to the town from the station (still, lovely views) but look out for the municipal minibus which will drop you near the tourist office where your first surprise awaits - lovely, helpful staff (open at lunchtime!) who will give you a map and their best English to guide you through the best bits of the town: a couple of pretty squares and a cute, simple, church, followed by the second biggest church in Andalusia outside Malaga, and next to it, almost hidden away behind a brick arch, the Municipal Museum - look for the plaque.
The entrance fee is minimal, and you could whip round its well-presented displays (including a pair of statue feet) in a couple of minutes, but two lovely ladies will explain how this Cordoba-style crypt came into being and why it has such a copious collection of foreign coins, then let you into the church. This is stunning, with statuesque pillars, intricate wooden ceilings and some very unusual features including mannequins posed in a Romeo and Juliet scene. Make sure you have some small coins (as we didn't) to say thank-you.
Then out into the incredibly fresh mountain air again and up to the castle on top of the hill - sadly closed when we were there - and you can see why this place warranted the second biggest church: it occupies a commanding position overseeing the surrounding plains, and any enemy approaching from around the hills (as the train does) could be in for a nasty surprise.
But all our surprises in Alora were delightful. Our mistake was to think there was a 10.40 something train out of Malaga - which is missed out, beware! - and then lose time walking up the hill. Otherwise we could have had lunch there and maybe bought more than a couple of postcards in the shops which shut for siesta. A great half-day out. Thanks, Alora!

We found this museum which although small was very interesting and Free, attached to the church which is beautiful. It is also the tourist info center. The staff were so friendly and helpful it was closing time at 2pm and they put the lights back on and let us in and also unlocked the beautiful church. They gave us a useful map and were so nice. Well worth a visit.

We received a Personal Tour of the Museum and Church by a young lady who couldn't do enough to help us, The Museum is attached to the church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnacion, The church itself is the 2nd largest in the Malaga area and was built when Alora was one of the main centres in the region. The museum has small but interesting displays and a half hour video showing the town in 1964, No cars!! A short but very enjoyable visited made more enjoyable by the staff member who showed fantastic enthusiasm to show us around

A small but extremely interesting museum highlighting the history of the town and local area. Housed in a beuatiful location on the Plaza Baja de la Despedia within the parochial church. The morning we visited it was staffed by an wonderful volunteer who was very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and obviously proud of the heritage of her town. As museums go a visit to both church and museum will take a relatively short time but can be incorporated into a visit to the castle as it is located at the bottom of the castle hill. You ahould also consider staying at least a few days in the town if only to experience a little of "el tranquilo".
