Roman ruins in beautiful location
Apr. 2019 • Couples
We rang up and booked the 4pm tour earlier the same day. There is parking at the visitor centre where the reception is and we were the only 2 people on our tour with 2 guides. This tour is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues, it is quite a long walk to see all the sites and the terrain is very steep and rocky in places, you need to wear suitable shoes to do it. The location is beautiful especially at this time of year with wild plants and flowers everywhere and cows and goats grazing around. Our guide did most of our tour in Spanish but did check that we understood and where we didn’t she translated into English for us. I would highly recommend a visit here, it takes about 2 hours in total and the views when you reach the top are spectacular of the mountains, an abandoned hotel and vultures swooping around. Back at the visitor centre you then watch an amazing drone film of the site for 10 mins which gives you a good overview. The visitor centre has a bar that serves food with a lovely outside area where you can enjoy the views surrounded by flowers, a lot of people come here just to have a drink and the prices are very reasonable. Anytime we are over this way we will definitely pop in here for a drink. There isn’t a huge amount of shade on the tour so I wouldn’t recommend doing it when it is very hot.

Wonderfully atmospheric
Jan. 2019
My husband and I were the only ones on Maria’s 4pm tour and it was wonderful. She is incredibly enthusiastic and passionate and makes the whole place come to life. The mausoleum was the highlight. The site has won a prize which Maria is receiving in Madrid next week - it’s all down to her enthusiasm and expertise. Very well-deserved! The city is ‘muy atmosférico’...
Lunch at the visitor centre next door was also delicious - home-cooked food including (vegan) wild thistles and asparagus fried with garlic and potatoes, lovely fresh salad, bread and a glass of house red all came to €20 for two.
The visit to both places is one of the highlights of our trip to Seville.

Well worth a visit - just a short drive from Ubrique. We booked a tour in the tourist office in Ubrique. Our guide, Isobel, spoke excellent English and was exceptional in her knowledge of the site and explaining its historical signifance and importance to the region. Also there is a great restaurant beside the information centre which does tasty meals at very reasonable prices. We sat there over lunch enjoying the magnificent view of the surrounding valley and mountains

Personal guided tour!
Oct. 2018 • Couples
Easy to miss this wonderful place but worth looking it up; we enjoyed a fascinating tour with knowledgeable guide Isabel whose English is better than my Spanish; we were the only two guests on the 4p.m. tour so it felt very special. Also, check out the great family-run venta/ restaurant adjacent to the site office; a late lunch there really helped me get up the hill...

A Roman military camp

The site is up a fairly steep hill but well worth the effort. The guide is knowledgeable and ours spoke good English. The car park is free however there is a small charge for the guided tour that includes a video film of the history of the site.

Excellent tour of Ocuri
Oct. 2017 • Solo
I was a bit surprised to learn the tour would take 2 hours and involved a lot of climbing but in the end it was worth it. I loved the mausoleum with the walls in tact and the views from the old roman enclave over the mountains was amazing. The guide Inma was very knowledgable and patient to explain everything in multiple languages. The site doesn't have an amfitheatre or mosaics but it does show some intact structres and explains the use of the city on top of the hill. Afterwards, there was a small video with drone images and 3d simulations of the houses. Perfect dive into history.

This is a hidden gem, don't hesitate to make a stop here !
Jul. 2017 • Family
Three good reasons to stop here:
1) spectacular roman site on a hilltop, quite unusual
2) stunning views on the surrounding area
3) this place (including the cafe at the entrance) is run by people who are passionate about Ocuri. We were guided by Maria, the archeologist. This was arguably the best and most enthusiastic guided tour we ever had in any historical site... Thank you so much Maria !
Ocuri deserves more visitors, you will not be disappointed....!

Archaeological treat!
Jun. 2017 • Couples
For those with an interest in archaeology and Roman Spain, Ocuri offers a tantalising picture into its garrison cities. Located about 1.5 klms outside the modern pueblo blanco of Ubrique, the fortified community commanded surrounding transportation routes through the valleys from the high tops. We were alerted to the site at Ubrique's tourist office where one can book a tour for 10am, 12 noon or 6pm. Guided tours are the only way this site can be accessed, and our tour was conducted by the excellent Irma, accompanied by capable and friendly assistant Pacho. Irma's commentary was delivered enthusiastically in fluent English, and she was most responsive to questions about different features. This site is still very much a work in progress archaeologically but features a very well preserved mausoleum, reasonable remnants of the entry gate, three functioning Roman cisterns, plus a variety of other partially-surviving structures (houses, bath, forum etc). Visitors should not expect the level of preservation of a Pompeii or the diversity/richness of Merida, but will gain a good understanding of key features of Roman garrison townships. The Ocuri reconstruction featured in a 8 minute film following the tour is also done very well. We greatly enjoyed our Ocuri experience and valued the commitment of Irma and Pacho.

Not well known, but a definite must even if you are not a Roman enthusiast. The site setting and views are stunning and the guided tour very informative. Web site for opening times.

A must for Roman history buffs
Jun. 2016 • Couples
The visitor centre is also next to a place for refreshments with splendid views. The times for the visits varies depending on season so do check before traveling long distances. The visit to the site is by guided tour and cost is reasonable €5 per head. It lasts for 2 hours and includes at the end a short video presentation. The site is at the top of a hill so the first part of the visit is a climb on good footpath for about 15 minutes. Then one arrives at the Mausoleum (see pic) which for all Roman towns/cities is situated just outsdide the walls. Then climbing more and passing through one of the main entrances to the fortified town. It has been restored but much of the original is in evedence. On then to view a water storage cistern and leading to the main flat area which was the forum and meeting place. The tour continues to see the Termas (baths) as well as other sights and from one location it is possible to view the Roman road linking Benaocaz with Ubrique in the valley. Whilst only 20% is actually excavated one can get a real understanding of how the Romans controlled this area and the transport links from the south into the hills.
A visit linked to seeing the Roman road would just about make this a full day's outing.
