Research who is buried here and the mark they left on history before visiting. Take butcher paper and crayon's to make transfers of the grave stones. Lunch at Six Feet under right next to the cemetery makes for a great finish.

We were here to see Margaret Mitchell, but wandered around since it was so beautiful. Her grave is clearly marked. It's actually a city park so you can wander around and look at the old tombstones and old trees. You can park outside the cemetery...More

Loved the Saturday morning tour! Highly recommend a casual stroll through this monumental, yes I said that, place! It's beautifully maintained and deserves better recognition as a place to go and learn the history of Atlanta.

This was well worth the time to learn about the history of this cemetery and the role it played in the evolution of both Georgia's and the southern region's history! Our tour guides, Lauren and Sarah were extremely knowledgeable and provided us with entertaining information.

As strange as it sounds I attended a wedding here. You wouldn’t have known you were in a cemetery unless you looked yo your left or right because the ceremony was held in a location that was full of flowers. While walking out I noticed...More

Historic Oakland Cemetery is a "must see" for anyone visiting the Atlanta area; nearly every aspect of Atlanta's history, from civil war to civil rights and Jewish history to African American history is represented there. Even if history is not one's forte, the beautiful monuments...More

I actually found the grounds to be very uneven so I recommend sneakers, but if you stay on just the paved areas, then sandals.
