IMHO, "National Museum of Civil War" needs some help to really be at par with its name. Very nice staff, convenient location (with parking), but I expected more.

Having been to this Museum twenty years earlier, it was nice to return and see what it has become. In those two decades, they had completely renovated the museum and expanded it to the upper floor. I like that they started with debunking myths which they brought up throughout the museum. They had one docent that was down in the... More

Behind the innocuous-looking storefront is an amazing array of artifacts and history. I'm a medical history buff and wasn't disappointed in the least. The displays cover several aspects of Civil War medicine, from medical education of the time, to tools used by battlefield surgeons, to life after the war for soldiers who had suffered horrific injuries, and much more. The... More

Great place to learn about the history of Civil War Medicine. As a former Army Medic, I just had to visit this museum and was very satisfied. Friendly staff, 3 levels of history, and a gift shop. Laid out very well, great displays, literature, and photos. If you stop and read everything, provide yourself 2 hours. If you just do... More

The Staff is EXCELLENT. The Museum is small but packed with history. We especially enjoyed our personal tour. The gift shop has some really neat gifts. We have toured the museum with each of our four kids during their studies of the civil war era to better help them understand what happened.

I visited the museum with my 78 year old dad. We had a very interesting and enjoyable day trip, learning history and comparing it to how we Army medics do things now. This AC controlled facility has several floors and offers an elevator for those needing it. You can also tour with or without a tour guide. We spent about... More

Not only for history buffs, many exhibits are hands on and good for kids/adults alike. The layout sends you back and forth, slightly confusing. For $9.50, you are getting a great deal. We got a coupon for free admission from the Frederick visitor center before visiting as well. The display models are well done. The store is well stocked with... More

So much information contained here, and some of it changed my way of thinking regarding Civil War doctoring. I had no idea that there were about 100 medical schools in the United States at the time--one in my Indiana home town!--and that most doctors were pretty well trained, for the time. I learned that both ether and chloroform were in... More

This place doesn't look like much from the outside but it is fascinating! There were so many quirky and interesting facts that we learned. One of the members in our group was a Pharmacist and he even found many of the items new to him. So many of the things we saw (like the animals) in the Civil War, you... More
