About
We are the first and largest Lutheran church in the state. This pioneer congregation help founded the American Sunday School movement(Francis Scott Key taught here), the first national Lutheran synod in America (General Synod met here first time in 1820), the first American Lutheran seminary(Gettysburg), and the first Lutheran english magazine in world (Lutheran Intelligencer). ELC was also a hospital site following the Battle of Antietam and cared for 1,000 wounded soldiers. The congregation is known for generous hospitality even today. Gifted with great organ and acoustic make this great location for annual Frederick Fine Art series free to public. Church Tours are given on the 1st Saturday of every month from April through October. We have a variety of programs for youth, young adults, and adults. This is an absolutely beautiful church, and difficult to miss! It's historical, but also contemporary as well. Be sure to stop in and ask the docents questions.

When we moved to Frederick, we visited quite a few churches. We finally found our "home" at Evangelical Lutheran Church. People were so friendly & we absolutely love Pastor Bob's sermons!

It is too bad that I did not have a chance to see inside because it was closed when I got there. Looking from the outside appearance, the Church design and architecture is so good looking. You can see and you can see it from a few blocks away. I was lucky to find a space to park just in front of the Church so I took a few photos before going to eat. Based on the history of the church, the church it was first ELC church in Frederick County and the biggest in Maryland and the largest in Maryland.

We attended a church service here for the first time and fell in love with the sanctuary. It's beautifully designed and the sun poring thru the stained glass windows was glorious. The original church started as a log cabin back in the 1700s and later on President John Adams attended a service in the current building I believe. The pipe organ is the largest in the county with almost 3,000 pipes. The church is so historical that regularly scheduled tours take place each month. The service was pleasant and we will be returning.

I believe it is on Wednesdays that a retired minister is at the church and he will talk with you and tell you the history of the church. He was an exceptionally kind man, wish I could remember his name. The church is very lovely and peaceful inside. You don't have to be a member of the faith, just stop in and appreciate the beauty, that's what we did.

I was excited when I saw that this church was across the street from the historical society. I knew that it had a rich history and wanted to see the inside. The outside is a lively white and is well taken care of. However all four entrance doors were locked and there did not appear to be any place to go to get entry. Very disappointed.

Hello - we apologize for any inconvenience that you had in entering our church. On weekdays our church is locked for security. However, the Hahn Building next door (the big white building with the metal fence to the right of the church) is our church office and is open from 9 am until 3 pm Monday through Friday. Anyone in the office can let you into the church to see inside. We also offer tours on the 1st Saturday of every month, as well as tours upon request. If you visit our website at www.twinspires.org/churchtours, you can find more information about our history. We hope you will come back and enjoy a tour!

If you like historic churches you will love the architecture and the history. After you enjoy anyone of the 3 services on Sunday (1 on Saturday) take a moment to walk through the court yard behind the church and look at the other historic buildings.

I could not wait to see the inside of this church. I am a fan of old churches and love to see them where ever I go. I was disappointed at the inside of this one. The ladies were very friendly & nice, but the interior is just......eh. Not as old and glamorous as the outside would suggest.....

Lots of interesting things to see here. The sanctuary was turned into a hospital after the Battle of Antietam. Be sure to look for the photos along the back wall.
The sanctuary details are beautifully maintained. Ask if you can go into the balcony to see some of the ceiling paintings in more detail. Also, ask if you can go into the garden courtyard between the buildings (the church is actually a campus of 7 or 8 buildings.)
