Big Thunder Gold Mine has an original tour which lasts 45-55 minutes and was founded in 1892. You see the largest display of mining equipment in the Black Hills and learn the history of the gold rush in 1876. We have two forms of panning: one is our commercial panning right on site. Guides will demonstrate theskill of panning, no time limit and we guarentee you will find gold. We also have claim panning where you will pan directly our of the creek 4 miles down the road on Forest Service property. Those exist in 4 hour trips.

This was a great looking place with a fascinating history. My daughter and husband went gold panning while we toured the mine. Great visit, gave me a good understanding of what it must have been to be a miner in the early days after the gold rush. The most intriguing was the commitment to the dream. Great guide too :)

We went there because we wanted to pan for gold. you pay 10 dollars for a pan of sand and they walk you over to a water tank. The employee i got was very unfriendly and dismissive. My hadn't panned before an I was excited to have him get some gold. After we finished our pans, I got a few... More

I am so sorry you were disappointed with your experience. I wish you would have come to the counter to express your views. I would have tried to resolve the problem. There is no excuse for the service. We get our food products each week fresh. We generally do not get reviews like this it must have been a very... More

This place was awesome, our guide Trenton was very people friendly and very informative. He spent just the right amount of time at each stop and was prepared for all questions. Gift shop personnel were extremely friendly and courteous. Recommend this place to anyone and of all ages.

Nearly 60 years ago our family vacationed in the Black Hills. I remember a tourist gold mine and thought it was really interesting. Because of that experience as a small boy, I wanted to go through another gold mine this many years later. Nick was our guide through Big Thunder gold mine in Keystone, SD. Nick provided us with a... My wife and I came there and got there around 9am and just got there in time for the tour, but I didn't like how they brought on three other people after the introduction was already done. Thank you for the good review. We add people to the tour this time of the year as long as they come before the tour goes into the mine which is only a few minutes. We have less guides due to less people. That is the 1st time someone has had a concern about this. The other party was informed... More
