Big Thunder Gold Mine has an original tour which lasts 45-55 minutes and was founded in 1892. You see the largest display of mining equipment in the Black Hills and learn the history of the gold rush in 1876. We have two forms of panning: one is our commercial panning right on site. Guides will demonstrate theskill of panning, no time limit and we guarentee you will find gold. We also have claim panning where you will pan directly our of the creek 4 miles down the road on Forest Service property. Those exist in 4 hour trips.

We loved this tour. It was very informative and interesting. Our tour guide was very good. The tour was just the right length of time to keep our teenagers interested. We booked the panning for gold afterwards which was kind of cool for the kids.

I live near Keystone went through a tour with Wounded warriors awhile back. This is on my favorites list in Keystone second only to Mount Rushmore. Old equipment is there intact. Amazing story of History in the area.

Good instructors helped us to find some small gold chips which we could take away in a provided little bottle. We were not rushed and most everyone in our group came away with at least a few pieces of gold dust

We weren't able to work in a visit to Wind or Jewel Cave on this visit, but our ten year old granddaughter wanted to see a cave -- so this old mine had to suffice. She (and we) enjoyed it a great deal.

I would book it ahead of time. We did the morning half day panning experience and it was awesome. Not too hot.
