About
Recognized as an architectural masterpiece among Catholic churches in the south, it is the spiritual home of a vibrant St. Mary Catholic community today. The construction of this place of worship was begun in 1842 as the Cathedral of the newly established Diocese of Natchez. The St. Mary congregation takes pride in the basilica's colorful and prayerful setting, and welcomes visitors from near and distant places. The city of Natchez, on the Mississippi River and the birthplace of Mississippi, is a tourist destination because of its historic ante-bellum homes. St. Mary Basilica, also ante-bellum, is the city's central landmark.

Saints galore are featured on pedestals, niches, and in beautiful stained glass window.
Local Catholic churches always hold some surprise inside and this one was no exception. The interior appeared so fresh (renovated in 2002) in contrast with its red brick exterior (constructed in the late 1800's). The blue and white color scheme was breathtaking. White arches outlined in gold leaf marked off a pleasant design against the blue ceiling. Four white pillars on each of the nave held up statues of different saints. On either side of the white altar were 4 more saints in niches. The completely white sanctuary had a colorful painting of the Crucifix behind the altar (1971 by Nataloni), making it a focus. The church had 16 lovely stained glass windows divided into 4 panels each which did allow much light into the church. Each panel had 1 image, again of different saints and these were done mainly by an Austrian from the late 1800's. Pick up a brochure at the entrance door which shows the layout of the church. All of the saints are identified. At the entrance is some information about the church becoming a Basilica. Worth a quick photostop. Walk into the park behind the church to view the Memorial to dead Confederate soldiers.

    Basilica, not cathedral
This basilica is absolutely gorgeous inside and out!! There was no service when we visited (I don't think visitors are able to tour during a service) but it was quiet and spiritual. The difference between a basilica and cathedral is that a cathedral is home to a bishop, a basilica is a church with special privileges (that status is rewarded by the pope). This is definitely a must see in Natchez.

    Beautiful church
Day trip to Natchez and decided to stop by the church. The inside was one of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen. Never seen anything like this before. It was very very peaceful feeling when we walked through the door. Didn't have time to do much because of the weather.

    European beauty in Natchez
I’ve been to many cathedrals in Europe and this Basilica was extraordinary. It was absolutely beautiful!!! It is a church and you could feel the peace in it. So thankful that it is encouraged to be quiet and respectful while there. We were able to pray and admire what is usually only seen in Europe right there in Natchez. This is a hidden gem. A must see no matter what your religion.

I had read about the basilica beforehand and was interested in seeing it on my trip to Natchez. I was surprised that is was open and visitors were able to go inside and make pictures. While inside the basilica the carillon sounded the hour. It was a great experience.

St. Mary's Basilica is one of the architectural gems of the Catholic Church. Construction began in 1842. Initially St. Mary's was labeled a cathedral but due to its historical significance, it was elevated to a minor basilica. The Basilica has very impressive stained glass windows. The altar is also very impressive. Next to the Basilica is Bishop Gardens. A nice spot to stop, wind down and reflect. Worth see if you are ever visiting Natchez, MS.

Stunning, peaceful, beautiful. All they ask is that you remain respectful and quiet. The building is beautiful. But the atmosphere - if you need to slow down and gather your thoughts, make a stop. I was there for New Years and the Christmas decorations were still up. So glad I stopped, felt renewed when I left.

Such a surprise to see such a beautiful Basilica in a small town is Mississippi. It compares to any of the cathedrals across the country. The church is open to visitors and pictures are allowed. The custodian also allowed us to go up in the balcony. It is a beautiful, active cathedral and very worth the time to tour it. There is also a nice garden outside the church. Located in the heart of Natchez, the Basilica is a hidden gem.

Oh, my goodness! St. Mary’s was a lovely historic place to visit. The leaded glass and frescoes were truly amazing. The whole place is a wonder to behold. We felt blessed to sit quietly and take in the beauty of the place. Folks with limited mobility might find the steps to the main entrance. Stop and say a prayer here for a world in need. You’ll be glad you did.

Worth going into. Not sure if they have tours we didn’t have time to check that out. We went inside and they were just finishing up a mass. We sat down and just looked around at the beauty of this church. Reminded me of some of the gorgeous churches you see in Europe. Definitely worth a visit.
