Emanuel Petersen came to Greenland from Denmark by a coincidence. He had worked as a theater decorator and as a marine painter at the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory. He fell in love with (understandably) Greenland, it's nature, the people and the light. All of this is captured in his paintings. He was contemporary with the Danish polar researcher Knud Rasmussen.... More

Our boat trip to Disko Island was delayed so we had a morning to explore Ilulissat. We went to both museums (I think it was a single ticket). The art museum was a very pleasant surprise. We liked the art and the gentleman that showed us around was a wealth of information. I believe he was from Denmark, but his... More

For a small town the art gallery was a surprisingly good exhibition. Set on 2 floors there was an interesting collection of scrimshaw on the first floor.

Some nice pix of local area painted by an apparently Danish article. Admission is free if you also go to town museum. Nice break from hiking and icebergs.

A very nice little museum. There was a special exhibition with the conflict between new and old - and it was very good. Should you have a question I'll be happy to answer it.

This museum has a very big Collection of Emanuel Petersens paintings. He might not be a great artist but his paintings is showing the Greenland that was in the old days and therefore an important part of greenlandish culture. The museum even shows contemporary art and is absolutely worth a visit

With so much to offer, a museum is not the first place to go in Ilulissat. We went there because the entry is included in the town museum and weren't dissappointed. The first floor features a variety of paintings from the danish painter Emanuel Petersen who mainly painted greenlandic motives. The top floor features a changing exhibition of local artists... The guy Ole managing the museum is friendly welcoming and knows a lot. He speaks English and does his best to answer your questions. The. Museum shows some classic art with Greenlandic motives. The upstairs usually have modern exhibitions that changes four times a year. Also has a little gift shop with nice posters and post cards.
