Stunning and unique -- a highlight of our trip
Sep. 2021
“Baroque” doesn’t begin to describe Cholula’s stunning Templo San Francisco Acatep. Talavera tiles in varied patterns and colors (though mostly cobalt blue, white and yellow) lie so thick on the façade that the columns, niches and arches are difficult to discern. The heavy wooden front doors, the only feature unadorned, were locked when we arrived, but when we walked around to the courtyard to the right as we faced them, we found a sacristan who unlocked them. Inside, the church is heavily embellished with gilded carving and plasterwork, but the vaulted ceilings keep the effect from being overwhelming. Flanked by curving polychrome columns, the altarpiece features statues of saints that seem almost naïve by comparison.

Stunningly Unique

This church is both stunning and unique. It’s a mix of Catholicism and indigenous cultures. The inside is so unique but pictures and video is not allowed on the inside which was sad. The walls and ceilings are some of the most unique and beautiful that I’ve seen. Definitely worth seeing.

Amazing, Visually Stunning, and Religious Kitsch (if that's a thing?)
Oct. 2020
I loved this place, it was wall-to-wall stunning. Every nook and cranny had religious details (statues, masks, paintings, drawings, etc.). I could spend an hour just searching... the ONLY reason I didn't give it 5* is due to the fact that no photo taking was allowed (I know, it's to preserve the beauty). But 100% worth a visit and maybe on of the coolest (hippest, in the religious sense) churches I've visited.

Stunning church of Talavera facade
Oct. 2019 • Couples
Church of San Francisco Acatepec is a colonial religious building, one of beautiful examples of Mexican Baroque architecture, especially recognized for its facade of Talavera mosaics combined with red brick.

It is located in the town of San Francisco Acatepec in San Andrés Cholula, Metropolitan area of Puebla and it was one of the first churches founded in the region, built in mid-16th century and completed in 1760. The azulejos of the facade were made between 1650-1750 made with Talavera pottery.

A hidden Colonial gem very much worth visiting!

This church, which is very close to the more famous of Santa María Tonantzintla, has a lot to offer to the savvy traveler. The decor is amazing, a la Mexican Baroque, all cover in gold-leaf. Each niche has something to offer; you can spend hours admiring all the work done there. If you are lucky, you will run into the keeper, which has many a tale to tell regarding the church, from its beginning to nowadays. Well worth the visit!

Beautiful Interior of this Historic Church
Jun. 2019 • Couples
Beautiful historic church. You enter from the side of the building and not the main door. We took local bus to reach this are which was fairly easy. Amazing decor and architecture here. Worth the visit!

Beautiful Church with very significant exterior
Jun. 2019 • Friends
My wife and I stopped by this church while in Puebla. We were both blown away with the amazing talavera tiled exterior. We have probably visited 100+ churches in Mexico, and this was one I will always remember. The interior is impressive as well, but the exterior is the true gem of this church.

I am so glad I had the opportunity to visit chill and see this extraordinary church. It cannot be missed. So different than anything I have see in any church in Mexico. My guide as thorough in his presentation of the church, its art and the edifice so magnificently constructed.

Architecture, History, Religion, Chaos and Death
Aug. 2018 • Family
The tiles in the facade are beautifully chaotic, this is one of the most beautiful facades you will see anywhere. You will find history, architecture, religion, chaos and death all within the same church. Literally thousands of tiles on the facade, a beautiful garden and a small cemetery with beautiful messages from their grieving relatives.

It worth the visit!
