About
“If you think of gardening as an art form, Ayrlies is the best expression of that art”. Ayrlies is one of the select few New Zealand Gardens of International Significance. Bev McConnell presents a garden that is nearing maturity and is recognised for both design and horticultural excellence. The millennium year spurred a new project creating a wetland in the surrounding 10 acres which is now home to many native and visiting wildlife.

- Daydream164215818503 contributionsAwesome with every weather, seriously a jewel of beautyI should have taken more photos, but sometimes you just want to enjoy the moment in peace. This garden is absolutely huge and absolutely stunning. We went there when the rain was poring, but that just made these beautiful smells much more intense. All the gardeners were absolutely nice and it is amazing what they all brought to life there. Seriously! If a version of me, who say the park would talk to another version of me, who didn't, I'd advise to visit even if it would cost 100. It was absolutely worth it. - Happiness464582719046 contributionsExceptionally Beautiful GardenI went to the Ayrlies initially on impulse and it is quite honestly one of the most beautiful gardens I've ever been to. So I decided to go back for my birthday, with friends and family. Organising a group visit with Ayrlies was easy and smooth. My family and friends were all amazed at the artistry of the garden and wanted to come back again in the future. We didn't make it through all of the wetlands because the grounds are enormous, but I'm determined to go there again. Highly recommend!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten November 14, 2023
- Jeremy P192 contributionsVery nice garden, but not easy to accessOverall, both the garden, and the adjacent wetlands were quite nice, on very tranquil grounds. If one does not have their own transportation, however, it is a bit of a logistical issue getting there. My recommendation from Auckland CBD: take the Pine Harbour Ferry, from the Ferry Building in AKL. Arrange in advance with Country Roads transport company to meet your ferry upon arrival, and to take you to and from the Gardens. It is not cheap. I was charged NZD 60 roundtrip. But you have no options, as there are no taxis and no Uber in Beachlands ( the community where the garden is located ). Country Roads can be found on Facebook. Here is their WhatsApp #: 021 084 28757 The ferry from Auckland to Pine Harbour ( Beachlands ) is NZD 32, per person, for return ( round trip ). Admission fee to the garden is NZD 20 per person. Allow 2-3 hours to walk the garden + wetlands.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten January 26, 2024
- Fiona EColchester, United Kingdom169 contributionsOpened especially for usThis is a mature garden with some lovely water features and trees. The autumn must be stunning with all the liquidambars and acers. The owners kindly allowed us to visit on a bank holiday when they were closed and we enjoyed a long walk around the gardens and wetlands wildlife Sanctuary. Beware… map not 100% accurate and not a huge amount of signs but definitely worth a visitVisited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 5, 2024
- margery HSydney, Australia132 contributionsThe jewel in the crownThis entire property is magnificent and is a must for residents of NZ and visitors alike. There are fabulous water features and ponds; commanding views to distant places including Rangitoto and wonderful spots to sit throughout the garden to see a variety of views some intimate while others will take you much further a field. You will experience different plants in bloom depending on the time of the year you visit. Huge variety of trees some huge; some mass planting and all of them stunning to behold. At the wetlands, which is mainly native plants you’ll encounter many lovely birds. Leave an hour and a half extra to experience a full excursion around the wetlands. The entire property is the most wonderful gift to NZ. Congratulations to the family responsible and to those who keep the dream alive.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten March 6, 2024

My mother and I visited Ayrlies Garden and Wetlands for my mothers 75th birthday in November. We arrange to go in on a Saturday and just about had the whole gardens to ourselves! The gardens a beautifully mature, well established and created around a series of streams and ponds. Each corner you turn has another garden 'room' which features a different garden style or mood, a different colour pallet or different aspect - the garden that just keeps giving! Our favourites were the cypress ponds and the cottage rose gardens stepping down to another pond with cypress. We recommend 1.5-2 hours for the gardens themselves for a leisurely stroll. For those a bit more able, through the bottom of the garden you can also head out to the wetlands for more of a walk. This is equally as beautiful and you need to leave an additional 1-1.5 hours to give this justice. We were a bit rushed but would love to go back and take a bit more time for the wetland walk as well.

We visited Ayrlies Gardens & Wetlands as part of the Auckland Activation Fund organised by TIME Unlimited Tours on Monday 20 June. Our active group of 12 were lucky enough to be given a guided tour by Luanna who kept us on track and led us to the wonderful wetlands. We took the long walk round the wetlands on the boardwalk and saw many nesting birds. Being winter the gardens themselves were not as colourful as they will be but round every corner there was something to enjoy. A great place to spend a few hours. Have coffee first in Whitford as no cafe on site.

This an outstanding garden and anyone who visits NZ and is interested in gardening should not miss it.
Inspired design, incorporating a lot of water features and a vast array of plants from all over the world make for a fascinating visit. We were fortunate to see it at its best. By way of example, who would expect to see a drift of Canna Lilies growing with the profusion of Bluebells in an English woodland?
We were welcomed by the Head Gardener, Ben Conway, who took time to answer our questions as did another member of his team.
It is worth adding that Ayrlies is quite near the Auckland Botanical Garden which is also well worth a visit.

We spent a great few hours here - our 3rd visit - and the gardens are as interesting as ever. The gardens combine lakes, ponds, waterfalls and streams surrounded by many native plants. The rose garden is a riot of colour and the wetland walk gives visitors opportunities to bird-watch. We were fortunate enough to have a conversation with Jaqueline, a daughter of the founder and designer of the gardens, Bev McConnel.
Well worth a visit!
