Great Snorkeling!

Perfect for families, snorkel straight from the beach, a bit of a swell the day we went but still saw fish. A little murky as sand drenching was going on quite a long way off the beach and was also s cloudy day, still worth the visit. Lots of other bits to go in surrounding area.

My husband and son went snorkeling, easy hire of necessary equipment there on site. They really enjoyed their time in the water and saw an Eagle ray. My other son didn't want to snorkel and I had a calf injury so we visited the Auckland University Marine Center which was fun (especially the quiz you can walk around and do... More

What a awesome experience, beautiful marine life, we saw lots of fish and stingrays. I do recommend that you invest in your own gear, we bought our own snorkel set for $50 each at the dive shop in Leigh, the staff were awesome. Great activity for people that enjoy the outdoors and the ocean. Limited shady areas it can get... More

We had planned on snorkeling Goat island on January 21. It was a windy day, we should have tried to get there earlier. We rented wet suits at the dive shop, but they have lots of them right on the beach, for a bit cheaper. The water was cold, and even with a wetsuit we stayed only 30 minutes. We... More

We recently spent an afternoon here & hired a clear bottomed kyack from the beach.....you HAVE to do this if you visit. It was such a great experience watching the snapper swimming underneath the kyack. We also saw an Eagle Ray. It costs just $10NZ for half an hour but they're nicely relaxed with the time.

I was recently at goat island with a group of friends and family and hired one of the clear bottomed kayaks. What a fantastic experience! I am not an experienced kayaker but took my 8 year old daughter out on the water. The view of the fish through the bottom of the kayak was fantastic, the seats were extremely comfortable... More

Went snorkelling here as it was supposed to be great visibility, managed to see snapper and stingrays plus some more fish but visibility not as brilliant as expected so maybe will try another time to see if better

If you are in the Marakana and leigh area you should have a look at this place. Parking is a bit up the hill and you have to walk a bit to the beach. Bring everything you need, e.g. towel, sun cream, picnic, book, etc. it is a great beach to hang out on a sunny day. We hired some... More

Having read Lonely Planet and other TripAdvisor reviews added this as a must on a rushed itinerary in NZ, but not sure I'd go again, and definitely wouldn't go out of my way to reach. Pros: Ok beach (if small and black) Good wildlife in sea (up to 1 metre fish, and lots of eagle rays) Snorkelling and wetsuit hire... More

Had high expectations for Goat Island and to be fair it was a stunning place. Think I overestimated the sea-life we would see, which made it slightly disappointing. However, there is a fantastic walk up to the top of the cliffs which give great views of the island and surrounding area. We then went kayaking which was really good fun... More
