Beautiful and wild

One of the nicest beaches in New Zealand - except in high summer when it is really busy. Go at a quiet time and have the whole place to yourself!

We and our Alaskan friends were so lucky a group of Takahe were eating just by the track. as we passed by and we were able to watch them for a few minuites, as they gradually went on, to greener bits.

Beach, birds, beautiful bush walks. what more can i say! The opportunity to immerse yourself in this haven of New Zealand's flora and fauna should not be passed up. There are so many species that are rarely encountered, Takahae, Bellbirds by the thousands (deafening!), Saddle backs, whiteheads, to name only a few. Camp grounds are nice too, near amazing swimming... More

Just visited again after a few years, for a mid-fall camping trip. Hardly any campers out there this time of year, so only shared the all-modes campground with 10 or so others. The pukekos and fantails definitely outnumbered us this visit. As we weren't up for a massive hike we stuck to the beach near the campsite, the area of... More

Nice place to visit but the car-park area was very limited with spaces and hard to find somewhere to park when the weather is good. Be prepared to walk some way to the beach so limit how much you carry and you'll need some type of shade. The beach areas were lovely and the nesting bird colony was very mesmerizing... More

This is a beach out on its own. Such a well kept Regional Park - well done volunteers! The beach is so lovely and good for boogie boarding. Take a picnic as no shops for miles. No shade on beach so you will need an umbrella. Only down fall is the park park - this beach is so popular that... More

We went the for a picnic with family and friends. Great spot... still bit crowded but not very bad. On low tide you can climb over the rocks ( you can find lots of different species crab between the rocks). Beach itself is clean and there are small caves as well. Worth spending a day over there. No shops around... More

Used the facilities for a large group camping trip. Well kept basic facilities that are frequently cleaned. No showers available but that's expected on a DOC park. Beautiful beach.

This series of beaches, with the associated camping ground, are better than any we have seen anywhere in the world. We always take our summer visitors there if possible. Apart from Eco toilets there are no facilities, although the camping area has toilets and simple showers. There are several great walks in the area, which has been freed of most... More
