Pan for gold or walk trails

While my eight year old son and husband panned for gold, my teenage daughter and I hiked the trails. Nice place to stretch your legs during drive along West Coast of South Island.

My husband is a mining geologist so these kinds of touristy restorations don't usually appeal to him, but we both enjoyed this stop. There is some mining machinery, some restored buildings, old photos, and you do get a feel for what the town must have been like back in the day. Doesn't take much time to take it all in.... More

Very interesting place, lots of history for a small place. People helpful and friendly. Loved the flowering cherries down the main street.

I found this area good to stop at and simply look around the surrounds. There are good toilets, and some activities to do. Also some short walks that show off some of the gold mining history of the location. Certainly, worth stopping for a hour just to look around.

This is a great activity for families. The place is steeped in West Coast history and vernacular and it's perfect for getting the idea of what gruelling conditions these people lived and worked in. There is an exciting, slightly spooky (adds to the thrill!) walkway - up hill and down dale with little shantys, tailings, goldworking and an early graveyard... More

It amazing just how much gravel was removed in the gold mining Days to create the huge man made lake. There are some funny spots too for a photo

Ross is about midway between Franz Josef and Greymouth. It's well worth visiting when travelling between these better known towns. The town features a faithfully restored 1800's gold mining town. Each building features what I would imagine, decor and implements of the era. Ample information is provided by recordings within the buildings, information posters and a helpful information centre. As part of a big group traveling around New Zealand we stopped here to have a break. A nice cosy place and enjoyed wandering around the different heritage buildings. The site also consist of a small-scale museum with a information centre and shop. Helpful and welcoming local staff.

We stopped here for an hour on our drive to Christchurch. Very interesting place. Lots of great history and we got to try some gold panning in the river for $10.

An interesting place to visit to see what the old goldminers did to extract the gold. A lot of hard work and an interesting little place to visit

Thank Susan P
