We booked a tour for a glacier hike explorer where the helicopter took us to the glacier. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I thoroughly enjoyed - it's like walking on a giant slushie machine at times and at other times feels like on the freezer section of the fridge. I have a greater appreciation of ice... More

Exhilarating experience from the initial helicopter ride to the glacier and then 3 hours of walking on the ice with an experienced guide - great value for money - to be up close to a glacier and viewing the blue colours of the ice as well as seeing Keas up close was quite special. Highlight of our trip to New... More

Nice park, lots of parking. Several trails available and well marked. Scenic but very open to elements. Be prepared with hats, sunscreen, water, etc. can walk up to 250 meters from glacier. Several great waterfalls along the way. Water is super clean and fresh, very cold

Beautiful day hike to see glacier. We did not get to helicopter/hike on the glacier due to cancellation of the helicopter tour due to windy weather. That is quite common and we were forewarned that weather can change plans.

Simply gorgeous, can only imagine how much more beautiful it was 10, 15+ years ago. Check out a documentary called chasing ice before you go if you can.

We did the 10:15am guided walk with happy tour guides and as per all kiwi attractions, it is a well oiled machine. We had the required shoes and rain coat but really in summer what you don't realise is how hot this tour is. All the websites tell you to bring layers and warm clothes, I guess they are catering... You can and should take a helicopter tour of the 2 glaciers and land on one of them. Amazing! You can also take a hike along the river bed to get to the base of Franz Joseph (and probably to Fox also but we didn't do that one!)

Hot day but a cool breeze kept things pleasant. Easy trail walk with occasional steep bits. We have 3 kids aged 10, 9 and 6. They had no trouble. Some people were carrying toddlers and this looked pretty hard work. The trail stops a fair way back from the glacier but you still get a good sense of its power... More

We hiked to the foot of the glacier and carried our lunch. We picnicked for an our and returned. It had rained so the waterfalls were great
