The best time to visit Temple Square in Salt Lake City is during the Christmas holiday season, they have a great display of Christmas lights for Children of all ages, it’s a truly impressive sight, Enjoy
There are tours for everyone. You can take the overall tour. Then you can tour the conference center individually. That is an incredible building all by itself. The visitor's centers have many self-guided things you can do your self.
Christmastime is especially beautiful. The lights...More
You can’t visit SLC and not come here. We were here at night and the temple is beautiful all lit up. It was pretty cold so we didn’t walk around much but the gardens are lovely and there are many statues all around. There are...More
Visiting Temple Square and the grounds of the Church of the Latter Days Saints is a must. The visitors' centers are informative, the space where the famed Tabernacle choir rehearses with the immense organ. The tours offer great insight into the Morman religion and culture....More

It can be as short or as long as you want. As others have said, the "official" tour given by the sister missionaries takes about 1/2 hour. You can hang out in both visitors' centers (each has different exhibits), attend the daily organ recitals, and see the movies in the adjacent Joseph Smith building to make a day of it.

We parked in underground parking beneath what used to be the Hotel Utah. It is easy to get access to Temple Square from there. We got 2 hours free parking with validation. The surprise was that when we took the elevator to the street level we entered into the beautifully restored lobby of the historic hotel. Lovely. The parking prices aren't too high and the convenience was worth it for us.
