About
*Please visit the temple website for open hours and appointments.* Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are considered houses of God, a place of holiness and peace separate from the preoccupations of the world. They provide a place where Church members make formal promises and commitments to God. They are also the place where the highest sacraments of the faith occur — the marriage of couples and the "sealing" of families for eternity. Temples serve as the only place where ceremonies such as baptism and eternal marriage can be performed on behalf of those who have died. Temples point Latter-day Saints to Jesus Christ and their eventual life with Him.

The Salt Lake Temple is a very special and beautiful place. The building is magnificent, and its history is fascinating. It was built by pioneers who had been driven out of the United States and established their home in the desert valley of the Rocky Mountains. The massive stones for the building were cut from a granite quarry in the canyons and hauled by ox cart. What an amazing feat. The grounds are always beautiful, and the Christmas lights are spectacular! However, I think the best feature of this place is the sweet peaceful feeling that rests on you when you enter. The temple and the grounds are expected to be closed for four year for refurbishment.

Major renovation currently, but there is still a lot of historical and architectural stuff to see within walking distance, including a few other historical buildings. You can still see the temple quite well, at the time of my visit (Dec ‘21) the original foundation is totally visible and probably still is? They had viewing windows on the east side and it was fascinating to see. You can also get a great overall view of the temple from the top floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial building next door.
In response to some negative reviews I’ve seen here that are somewhat unrelated to travel, I’ll say that for every person with angsty opinions about this church, there are plenty more who will tell you how beneficial and joyful it is in their lives.
To put it simply, the whole point of the church is establishing and maintaining a relationship with Christ, learning and striving to live after the loving and peaceful example he set (which of course is a life long, imperfect process for all of us humans).
Inside the temple, people simply learn teachings that will help them be Christ-like in their lives and with their spouse, and make special prayerful promises with God that they will do their best to live up to those things. That’s it. Nothing funky, nothing cult, occult, extra terrestrial, etc.
Why the limitations on who can go inside? It’s the same reason why you would limit the people who attend your special, soul searching, heartfelt prayer in the forest, the birth of your child, a special heartfelt moment with your spouse, etc. You don’t dislike people, you’re not trying to exclude anyone, there’s no elitism, and definitely nothing secret or taboo. It’s simply special and sacred, like the above mentioned examples.

I didn't want to give the mormon church 10% of my annual income, so I couldn't visit the temple. Anyone can walk around the beautiful well groomed grounds. Also visitors can attend the informational displays around the temple, but can't go inside unless agreement to pay 10% of annual income. Seems like a high price to pay.

When in Salt Lake City, you must make a stop at the Temple. It is a magnificent and incredible work of architecture.
The Salt Lake Temple is a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. At 253,015 square feet, it is the largest LDS temple by floor area.
It took 40 years to build and opened in 1893.
While there take the tour and see the Celestial Room, it is magnificent.

I didn't think people of other faiths could visit this place, but I was wrong. There is a big square with lots of tour guides. The landscape and architecture are amazing and make for great photos. There are also a lot of building with a lot of information and also interactive things you can do.

The temple is undergoing extensive renovations and is completely covered in scaffolding. Apparently, the renovation isn't planned to be completed until 2025. The temple is NOT - even when not under construction - accessible to the general public. The tabernacle is next door and is open to the public. They still have regular organ concerts there. Also, there is nearby a visitors center where they have on the second floor a cut away "dollhouse" display of the interior of the temple - which shows how the interior looked..

Major renovations currently underway. The entire facility is shut down with exception to the tabernacle and the building next to it. The church and the rest of the grounds are closed. Being arguably the #1 tourist attraction in the state, one would think that someone with the IQ of a tomato would know to work on sections of the buildings at a time so that tourists that travel 1000's of miles to see the facilities will not be disappointed and can view the church and buildings. Plus their website states the open at 9am. NOT TRUE! The Tabernacle and anything else that may not be currently under construction, open at 11am. I told them this and they said they were working on it. The same person in charge of shutting the whole facility down for construction must also be in charge of the website. Ridiculous!

Life is so crazy, and this place has often been where I have come to get away from it all and catch my breath. While I’m here I find that my mind is clearer, I’m more confident about the future, and I feel closer to God and my family. There’s a feeling here that you won’t quite find anywhere else. 10/10 would recommend.

Temple is under construction until 2026. You do have some views of the foundation work they are doing. We toured the Convention Center, very impressive, seats 21,000. They have a daily pipe organ recital at noon, open to the public, free, and it was quite good. Plenty of missionaries at every turn to help with questions or show you around.

Walking up to its majestic spires and intricate details, I felt a sense of awe and reverence. The surrounding gardens and reflecting pool add to the serenity of the place, making it a perfect spot for quiet contemplation. What struck me most was the atmosphere inside; it's calm and peaceful, a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Whether you're religious or not, the temple's architecture and the sense of tranquility inside make it a must-visit. It's not just a religious site; it's a testament to human craftsmanship and the beauty of spiritual sanctuaries. A visit to the Salt Lake Utah Temple is an experience that lingers, leaving you with a sense of wonder and peace.

I read there is an organ recital everyday at noon along with an acoustic demonstration( pin drop). Can I as a non-Mormon hear this? I’m assuming this is inside the temple, correct?

If you’re there on a Sunday the Mormon Tabernacle Choir does a weekly nationwide televised performance. Brought my mother in law from Florida years ago. Still says it was a highlight of her life. Well worth attending. Open to the public and well attended by many tourists.

Are there certain dates and times that the Temple is open for visitors with guides?
Written January 28, 2016
The temple itself is a house of worship, and tours of the building are not given. Visitors are invited to learn about the history, construction, and purpose of the temple by visiting the Visitor Center. Building tours are given-without need for appointments- at the Visitor Centers, the famous Tabernacle, and the Assembly Hall. The gardens are lovely and should be enjoyed leisurely year-round.

Will they make an attempt to convert us if we visit?
Written November 13, 2015
Short answer; No. The church representatives on site welcome your questions, and will guide you to exhibits which may explain church principles and doctrine, but you will feel very comfortable about being able to roam around on your own without being hounded or having to answer prying questions. Most report finding staff members polite and courteous with no hint of a sales pitch.
