A recent visit to the Stillman House and neighboring museum was well worth the effort. The museum was very interesting, well organized and informative. Fairly small but loaded with well presented information. The lovely Stillman House has additional information and offers a sense of what life was like in the 1800’s in Brownsville. Definitely worth a visit. Great for history buffs!!

Went with a group and hit up museum that is right next door first. The gentleman at the entry desk was a font of information about all things Brownsville. The museum is a self-guided type with relics from the early days of Brownsville and it's ties to both Mexico and the U.S. We hit it during the holiday display of Christmas trees and that made it more special. The old Christmas artifacts were so interesting as well as some of the themes. After we saw the museum we went next door to the Stillman house. That only took a few minutes to see. I felt like the museum was far better than the house. Can't remember the cost but it was not expensive...just a few dollars. You could spend several hours here or see quite a bit in a short amount of time. I believe our group was there for both sites for about 90 minutes. I don't think children would be very interested for any long period of time. I would suggest that after you are done to drive along the old streets lined with palm trees and take in the architecture of the older homes of Brownsville. Then stop in at Lola's and try a freshly made dessert (cream horns are marvelous) and coffee. If you are hitting the area at lunch time, go over to the 1848 BBQ and grab some great brisket and pork ribs.

On our recent trip to the Rio Grande Valley, we thought that knowing more about local history would add to our experience. Located in the center of "Old" Brownsville, the museum served our needs well. Though small in size, it's well designed to provide an interesting written and pictorial overview of Brownsville and the region's dramatic history. The impressive antique collection greatly adds to one's appreciation for the struggles the earlier population endured.

The two buildings which make-up this museum are well worth a visit. One is a residence authentically furnished and easily understood from the brief explanations at the entry to each room. the second building covers the history of the area which is fascinating if nothing else because of the cross-borders connections it has.

The Stillman House is a smaller part of the main history museum. We never heard of Stillman before attending an outstanding lecture on him elsewhere, so seeing his house meant more to us. Some of the material in the exhibits was a bit too introductory for people who have studied the area before, but well presented, and the section on the Mexican Revolution was especially interesting. Also offers a good walking tour guide via phone.

This was our second visit to the Stillman House. The museum is interesting and informative. Lots of local history in Brownsville. There's an automobile in the museum that's one of a kind. The Stillman House is separate from the museum but included with the $5.00 admission and is full of history from the Rio Grande Valley. There's also a gift shop with some miscellaneous items. We enjoyed our vita do would gladly come back again the hext time we're in the area.

Inexpensive, nicely laid out, interesting exhibits and friendly staff. Good to visit on hot day in Brownsville. Visit UTRGV and Texas Southmost College campus in the morning and visit here in afternoon.

Wow, the entrepreneurship in the early days of this area. How businessmen like Stillman worked & profited by the US & Mexico during the many different wars & revolutions.
If you're interested in the history of the RGV this is a "must see"
