About
Imagine over 500 colourful hot air balloons rising up at dawn over the New Mexico landscape… there's truly nothing like it. The place to experience it is each October at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Spectators and balloon pilots from all over the world gather (some even camping in their caravans) to watch the mass ascensions held in the mornings, and night events like the 'glowdeo'. Music stages are set up during the day and performers stroll through the festival crowds, which can number 750,000 people.

- EllenS123Roanoke, Alabama138 contributionsCan't go too much! This is my favorite activity/festival in the U.S. I have been twice and will return this year also. On our first visit, we bought general admission tickets, and while we loved seeing the balloons, it was very crowded. Seeing the ascent in the morning is absolutely breathtaking! And the most exciting thing is that you can walk around the whole field, which is huge, and visit with the over 500 balloon crews! Standing right there beside a crew as they prepare for take-off is the most fun! Each crew gives out little "business" cards with their balloon name, and details. There are lots of good gift shops too and food stands, but don't spend all your time there. Balloons take off at staggered times, so from sunrise on, for a couple hours, there is constantly something to see! We upgraded to Gondola Club, which is a private viewing area, and we will never go back to General Admission!Visited October 2019Written May 23, 2020
- PhyllisFPBaltimore, Maryland213 contributionsKnow before you goResearching this event, I read that you should try to go a couple of mornings and I thought, "Why would you be insane and take the bus at 4:30 AM more than one morning?" And my husband had spent the three days leading up to the event asking everyone we met whether it was really necessary to get up and take a 4:30 AM bus. Yes and yes. That's why the early buses are full of local people from New Mexico--they know the drill. Everyone is in a festive mood. In fact, one of the things I loved about it is that despite it being the "international" balloon fiesta and there are balloons from all over the country and the world (even some corporate ones), it still feels like a very local event. There are teenagers hanging out, lots of people bring their kids, and even the bus drivers are really into it. There's local pride in the event, in the very best way. No, we didn't get to see a Mass Ascension because the wind was blowing the wrong way (we heard that the one trial balloon was headed towards tribal lands). But that's okay because it was gorgeous watching the would-be Dawn Patrol lit up in the dark, and also hundreds of flames going at once. You watch the field transform from darkness and emptiness into a fiesta of color. It's beautiful and wonderful even with the balloons on the ground. Also, good eats, though lines are long. But if you have your heart 100% set on Mass Ascension, definitely try more than one morning.Visited October 2021Written October 31, 2021
- SuzyQu15Brooklyn, New York1,519 contributionsSomething to see!!We arrived at the field around 5:30 a.m. via a tour bus. The roads were crowded with traffic but we arrived in time to see the balloons being fired up in the dark sky. Such an amazing sight! I learned that this was the largest balloon festival in the world and it was something to be able to walk out on the field and see the balloonists up close going about their operations. One balloon took flight around dawn to test the weather. Unfortunately that was the only one that flew that day because of high winds 🙁🙁. It was still an amazing event to see. Many many balloons were inflated before they were informed they could not fly that day. There are many vendors that line the main strip to wander through. It was cold in the early morning but warmed up later as the day wore on, so I strongly suggest dressing in layers. Definitely an event to see! I can only imagine (and see pictures) of what this is like when the balloons take flight!!Visited October 2021Written October 23, 2021

We did the early morning and it was completely worth waking up my 6yr up at 430am and dealing with all his crankiness!! To avoid dealing with walking too far or parking, we found tickers with a shuttle service. It was very easy to navigate directions, and the group was very well organized. To stand in the middle of the field as the sun is rising and walking among the balloons .. absolutely a wonderful memory. We were even able to walk through and touch the balloons as they were inflating. The park where the fiesta was located had plenty of food stalls and other merch. It was incredible.
NOTE: If you do go early, pack a blanket and warm clothes.

Just wanted to give a big shout out to Alfred Salazar, who works for this organization. He was our Hot Air Balloon Tour Guide; and just did an incredible job as our guide!
We went in February of this year for a ride and it was great.
Many thanks!

OMG! This bucket list item couldn't have been more perfect! We went on the second day of the 5Oth anniversary of the Fiesta. We reserved the shuttle transport which was so convenient and reasonably priced. We had to arrive at the pickup point at 5 am, and the operation was as smooth as silk. No hiccups at all. It was pitch dark when we arrived at the park. We just found a spot on the field (we brought our folding chairs) and sat down. As the sky lightened we saw balloons all around us! They sent up the dawn patrol (balloons that test the wind conditions) and once the all clear was given it was a whirlwind! Balloons all around us started inflating and soaring skyward! It was and is a not to be missed experience! A few hints: get up early, dress in layers (it is cold in the morning), bring folding chairs and by all means take the shuttles!

We've had two trips to the Balloon Fiesta. Expect to be cold as you wait for the dawn ascension. There will be vendors selling fake alpaca sweaters and overpriced hot chocolate. Expect traffic congestion getting in and out, unless you arrive much before dawn. Expect taxi drivers who are confused about where to pick you up.
The whole hassle melts away when you first see the fires set under these balloons, and they go up. To make it a really memorable experience, reserve a spot on one of the balloons, which you can do by contacting Rainbow Ryders. Do it months in advance.

A long planned trip to the USA culminated in a week in Albuquerque for the Balloon Fiesta. Although we were unable to fly we still enjoyed visiting the Fiesta on three mornings to see both a mass ascension and the special shapes take to the air. A magical experience that I would recommend to anyone to make the effort to visit. The drone show in the early hours was amazingly effective. The ability to simply stroll around as all the balloons were being inflated and flying was simply wonderful.

My husband and I attended the 50th Anniversary Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta this October. We attended the morning session with the shaped balloons. We had the opportunity of a VIP experience at the Balloon Museum which included breakfast, bird's eye view of the event, VIP parking, admission to the Balloon festival and a percentage off Museum shopping. It was a once in a lifetime event for us and it was wonderful. Museum staff are very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Food was great and our view was incredible. Met some people from the area that gave us plenty of information on this event. Went onto the field and watched balloons filling up and lifting off as well as landing in front of us. Learned that you can trade pins as well as get trading cards from every balloon group. Fantastic experience! Was well worth every penny!

While the morning was cooler than expected, having the opportunity to walk among the balloons as they are being filled and taking off was worth of every moment. The LED drone show was amazing.

This was a definite must see once in your life. My husband planned a year in advance. Our 33 day road trip from PA to CA was planned around the 1st weekend
of the fiesta. We did not manage special tickets for a separate area with seating and food. So general admission it was. You have to go at about 4:30 am for morning glow and mass launch. Traffic was a mess, $20 to park and and a 5-6 block walk to the launch area. It was packed, it was freezing. Thankfully we brought chairs but were not dressed warm enough. I believe it was 39 degrees. We dressed in layers but folks had hats, gloves and blankets or they were buying blankets from vendors. Lines for food were ridiculous, but the balloon glow and mass launch were spectacular, a must experience. We were supposed to return for an evening event but the weather did not cooperate. You must have tickets for each session.

I truly did not know what to expect when I first heard about the balloon fiesta. My initial thoughts were it was certainly something different to do but I always thought it was going to be lame.
The total opposite of lame ended up being my experience. I would recommend this to anyone....the activities, the people, the colors, the balloons, and of course plan ole New Mexico scenery.
Recommendations:
Plan on being around town for multiple days (Saturday and Sunday) to account for weather shifts.
Get there early in the morning for the morning glow on the first day.
Dress in layers! I froze in the early morning hours.
Bus it in if you can to save yourself from the traffic woes.
Talk to people! It's amazing the different types of people you get to meet during this event and in such a beautiful state!

If it is raining will the balloons still go up?

The balloons will not go up in bad weather, wind, or rain. They have cancelled 2 days so far during this 2022 fiesta but the weather looks like it’s improving for the rest of the event. Enjoy!
Hoping to bring a group of special needs travelers. Getting to the festival at the crack of dawn isn't really an option, even 7am is too early for some. If we get to the festival grounds at 10am, will the balloons still be in the air? Would it be better to get tickets for the evening session?

It may depend on the day. While the balloons are supposed to launch, on a windy day they won't be able to. But that's something you can't predict.
As others stated, most balloons will have launched, and some even landed back at the grounds or elsewhere, others will stay tethered to the ground.
Each day is a special event. We went on a day where the balloons were competing in a competition of games. They will launch, and try to re-land in the field while accomplishing a task for points. Check out the events schedule for each day to see what might be a good fit.

Hi! The 49th Balloon Fiesta will take place October 2-10, 2021.
I will only be passing through for one Tuesday. How many balloons are usually launched on a normal weekday ascension? Is it work paying the fees if I plan to leave by 9am?
ABQBalloonFiesta
Albuquerque, NM
Hi Scott, non-mass ascension days feature several hundred balloons. Mass ascensions typically feature 500+. We do recommend planning to arrive at Balloon Fiesta Park around 4:00 a.m. to best avoid traffic. Weather permitting, you will be able to experience much of Balloon Fiesta before 9:00 a.m., as the launch is scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m.

Can someone give me a practical idea of the layout of the festival ? Where do the balloons take off from in relation to the hotels in the area? How accessible is the best viewing area ( for photography) and where ? Is it necessary to book a tour or can one just reserve a motel room in the area and go to the fiesta ? Any hands on advice would be appreciated.

Hello, the event takes place at Balloon Fiesta Park located near the intersection of Interstate 40 and Alameda Blvd. At the park, you might consider the south side of the field or the west side of the field for photos. To access the event, you will need a general admission ticket for each session. We do recommend planning to arrive at the park around 4:00 a.m. for morning sessions, to best avoid traffic. Hope this helps!

It’s definitely the best way to get there. It costs 12 dollars and includes gen admission fee of $10! Can’t beat it. Buy online. Four different locations to choose from. It doesn’t run Mon Tues or Weds because it uses school buses.
