My wife and I like to photograph sunsets and this place has an excellent viewing spot. plan on getting there about a half hour before sunset and hike around a little and maybe find your perfect spot. Bring friends and kids will love it too.

I was fortunate enough to visit Gates Pass during the recent full, Blood moon over Tucson. I was facing West at sundown and took some fabulous photos. Then on my return to Tucson, I was lucky enough to get some great shots looking east. I...More

Must stop at this viewpoint any time you cross this pass. It is a nice combination of history, landscape beauty and includes a nice hike up to a higher viewpoint if you have the energy and mobility. Restrooms available.

We raced out to Gates Pass to grab a view of the Tucson sunset on a weeknight. Unfortunately we were late to the game as there was no place to park once we reached the pass (just as the sun was setting). We snapped a...More

We have visited Gates Pass on multiple occasions, twice on bicycle. The road is narrow and probably avoided by those in an RV. Bicycling it is exciting to say the least. For cycling it is best to go East to West because the approach in...More

Drove through Gates Canyon twice, and boy, there is a lot of traffic. There seems to be commuters coming through here from Tucson proper to the newly developed area on the west side of the hills. The cactus forest is wonderful, but the road is...More

We took the road in order to view the hieroglyphs. The road was very bumpy but, in a rental, who cares? We arrived at the parking lot and it was a pretty good up and down hike to signal hill to view the petros. Not...More

We arrived just before sunset and scrambled up the rocks to locate the perfect spot to view the setting sun. We were not the only ones to have this idea! However, it was peaceful and beautiful. I recommend wearing sturdy shoes, bring some water (it's...More

You can stay in the parking lot and see the sunset or go to a paved overlook area right next to the lot.

At the top of the pass is a nice parking lot. Looks like paths go out several directions.

If you travel from Interstate 10 up Speedway towards gates pass you'll be okay. Just do not pass the parking lot at gate pass. The road is extremely curvy after that and the drop-off is tremendous.
